Including myself, I still find people who forget that in 5th edition you can be pinned and still might have to fall back due to a failed morale check.

Say that my unit of 4 remaining space marines takes a casualty that causes pinning and they fail the check. They are thus pinned, and therefore are forced to go to ground.

Since they are eligible for a morale check and can choose to fail due to Combat Tactics, it would seem that they are no longer pinned since it says they return to normal

under the going to ground rule.

The dangers of falling back notwithstanding, is this a valid tactic?

Has anyone used this to their advantage?

Thanks,

Steven

Completely valid. I wrote about this when the SM codex first came out. Not many people use it though because so few people seem to play Ultramarines.

Also, if you expect to have to take a morale test you can choose voluntarily to use the Go to Ground rule to boost your cover saves, then choose to fall back afterwards using Combat Tactics, then regroup with ATSKNF.

Since this has been answered and I have a question pertaining to similar subject material it seems go to ground only allows failed morale checks to return a unit to normal, does this mean if my unit went to ground in the enemy shooting phase, then the enemy assaulted my unit and for some reason my unit wiped the enemy out entirely, am I correct in believing I would still be unable to move normally in the following turn.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

Correct. Being assaulted does not remove the "Gone to Ground" status.
