Im sure this has been adressed before, but is it possible for a battle suit to take a drone controller hardpoint and a hardwired drone controller and therefore take up to 4 drones?

No.
"No model may pick the same item twice"
"The same rules apply to the system whether it is hard-wired or hard-point mounted"

And furthermore: "A model with a drone controller must take one or two gun, marker or shield drones, in any combination, from the wargear list."
As the rules for drone controllers are dependent on the model with the wargear (not the number of times the wargear is taken), you may only take 1 or 2 drones.

The fact that the same rules apply doesn't mean that they're the same item. They're two different items that share the same rules.

That part I agree with, though... and from memory was the general concensus the last time this came up. It's debatable, but the fact that it's not specifically listed as a cumulative effect, but is instead an 'it has it or it does't' style affair suggests that you get no benefit from taking the two controllers.

RaW I would say you can take both, but only get 1-2 drones anyway.

Hmm. Turns out it is explicitly prohibited in the 3rd edition codex, but not the 4th edition.

On the other hand, in the 4th edition codex none of the effects of hard-wired systems can possibly be cumulative (see above) so there's no point .

Okay, another question about drone controllers (sorry if this one has come up before):

In the tau codex it says on page 25 "...no model can pick the same item twice" in reference to wargear. In the drone controller entry on page 26 "...a model must take one or two gun, marker, or shield drones, in any combination, from the wargear list"

So, my question: Can a single model with a drone controller take two of the same drones as I see people putting in their lists so often? I'm leaning towards "no"

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

Good point. I'd never thought of it that way.
Perhaps that the drone controller specifically says that you can take two is exception enough. Codex > Codex?

The codex states, under the Drone Controller rules, that you make take up to 2 Marker, Shield, or Gun Drones in any combination, emphasis mine of course.
