I'm sure this has been covered before, but I just today noticed we had some new P3 primer at my FLGS. Is it any good? $10 puts it back at the just-barely-acceptable price that GW used to occupy, and I'm curious how it stacks up. Any experience out there yet?

haven't used it, hadn't even known it was out.
I can't really see the point of getting a primer from a game company when a can of primer from walmart will work just as well and be a good deal cheaper.

If you pick some up, let us know how it is though

Deathmart primer is really that good? And it's actually "primer"? Hmm ...

I'll more than likely give the P3 a shot, but wrecking my new chaos army with a crap prime is pretty low on my priorities

I try not to buy anything from walmart ever.

I've been using generic rustoleum primers lately from home depot, they work real good. The only game company primer I'll use is from Army Painter, but thats only if I want to prime in a certain color, but for black & white rustoleum works best

Yeah, Rustoleum and Krylon dark gray and white primers here, too.

I've been intrigued by the Army Painter primers which the FLGS recently got in, but the price tag is prohibitive at $15.00 a can. Are they really all that? I imagine it makes basecoating a cinch...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

I happily paid $15 a can for mine just because it saves so much time, especially when I had to paint up 48 red skinks. I got a can of the red army painter primer and primed them all, then just gave em a wash with badab black and a quick drybrush for some highlights and done

I also used the bone color spray for my chaos marines and that also worked real well, would be great if you have to paint a lot of skeletons in a hurry.

So it just depends on if you want the time saver or not, that's all it really comes down to. The primer is good though, it sticks to the model real well and doesn't kill any detail and it's great how they tried to match a lot of GW colors. The blue one is perfect for ultramarines too.

Overall, yeah you'll be paying more that a cheap primer and brushing on the base color yourself, but to me the time saver is well worth it.

The guys at Privateer Press used to use Duplicolor Sandable primer before they started making their own. I imagine that the brand is similar. Mind, the Duplicolor stuff will cost half as much, so I don't know that it is worth it.

Unlike GW's recent years, P3 makes real primer, and based on other P3 products, I imagine that it is good primer. That doesn't mean that I'll be straying from Duplicolor soon.

Oh, by the way you'll need to go to Checkers or some automotive store for Duplicolor (for those boycotting Walmart) and make sure you get the sandable primer.

Krylon and Rustoleum...Krylon has more colors now (just not specified as a primer)...just make sure you get the one that does not say gloss.

The first time I used Krylon, I used the Krylon H2O line just because I thought if I screwed up my primer I could scrub it off with soap and water. Well, it worked. My first prime with this, it went on too thick (didn't shake it enough). So I scrubbed it clean before it had the chance to dry, let it rest and tried again the next day. And it worked fine.

Rustoleum went on a little thick for me also (didn't shake it enough again) but it was sandable, so I worked it out with my files and sandpaper.

Krylon Fusion (for plastics) give excellent coverage but go on smooth/glossy. But this problem was solved by letting each thin layer of foundation dry completely before working on the figure again. Definitely not for speed painters.

Thanks for all the advice lads. Off to Lowes - dating a manager there = discounts - to see what I can find. Rustoleum's website has some very promising sandable black auto primer, but I'm guessing Big L won't have that in stock ...

I'm a big fan of Krylon for my other projects, so we'll see what I go with.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So I got 2 cans of the dark grey rustoleum auto primer, felt pretty good about it. Just sprayed 1/3 of my WoC army ... and everything is kinda chalky. We're not talking armory fuzzy, but still noticably chalky. Can someone tell me this is what rustoleum does and everything will be fine? Cause there's 0% chance of rain today and low wind ...

Why the feth is priming such a pain in the ass? Freaking stressful bs ...
