On the perfumed wind

Hi all,

Signed up for my first GT this year- specifically, the Alamo down in San Antonio. The bonus is that it will finally get me to actually finish up my Dwarves. As I add them, I thought I'd post up here.

Kick this thing off with the runesmith conversion I made for the army...

Hroddr "Zaki" Ottarson

Did this with the 6th edition organ gun crewman. I find the war machine crew to be a good source for conversion as they often seem to have a lot of character and dynamic poses that can be hard to find in the rest of the Dwarf line.

On the perfumed wind

Thanks much for the comments, gents. Here's the most recent additions...

Finally got some more added to the army. Some of the past month (or more) has been spent making movement trays and basing up the warriors that I had not yet gotten to. But importantly, a regiment is added! Here are 12 slayers, all together:

Next a few up close shots...

Here's three from the regiment hailing from Wyr Mingol, The White Watchtower. During the Battle of Two Crossings, their entire clan fled when assailed by goblin wolf-riders. Though most were run down, Skorri, Alfi, and Gudhvarr survived, but shamed, took the slayer oath and daubed white paint in honor of Wyr Mingol.

Of these, Skalf lost his family's ancestral heirloom, an axe of modest runic power when his pack pony tumbled down a pass in the Dragonback Mountains. Though he searched for months, he was unable to recover it, and took the slayer oath, vowing to forsake the traditional Dwarfen weapons of which he was unworthy. As you can see, he hasn't really done so well...

Halgrim was a wealthy merchant who inherited a massive fortune from his father. Unfortunately, poor business sense and rising gambling debts wiped out the family coffers, leaving him and his brothers destitute.

Valdi was a goatherd, working a sizeable herd to supply the Kurri halls of Karak Hirn. One day he returned to his Zak after making a delivery to discover a marauding giant had eaten every goat and crushed his house. Now he seeks to avenge himself on the race of giants.

Sverri abandoned his post crewing Klink-A-Grungi (Grungi's Chisel) when it became apparent the cannon was about to be charged by zombies.

Uthor was a ranger who, after passing out from too much ale, failed to notice the (spectacularly loud and unsubtle) advance of Waaagh Ragsnik, losing valuable preparation time for the Dwarfs of Karak-Und at the disastrous Battle of Two Crossings.

Orn is a curious character. A stonemason working in the city-states of Tilea, (where he adopted his unorthodox manner of clothing) he was often heard to boast that no umgi would ever outdo his works. When Count Luciano Cateno of Pavona did not select his designs for the latest border fortress, Orn stormed into the count's chambers. It is unknown what transpired there, but Orn departed, short an eye and with his name blacklisted from all contracts from the city-state.

Snorri was the quartermaster for Karak Norn's Kneebreaker clans. When the hold prepared to make war on the treacherous elves of Loren, they were delayed by three months, thanks to the utter mismanagement of food stockpiles by Snorri. Completely humiliated, Snorri resigned his position and wandered away to seek a noble demise.

Lokki's vicious temper eventually led to his downfall. In response to a drinking hall slight (possibly merely imagined), Lokki declared a grudge and sought to settle it immediately as he had so often in the past. However the blow he struck proved to be a fatal one, to none other than the heir and only son to Karak Und's weaponsmith guildmaster.

Kjargrim took the slayer oath when he realized he was the only duplicate miniature in the regiment.

And that's it! I had a lot of fun with this painting, including trying some things I hadn't expected to paint in this army. Namely, swords, togas, and bare dwarf buttocks. Pics are a little dark, but let me know what you think...

Pure win, very awesome! I love that each model has a bit of background and loads of personality. Great job converting and painting, keep it coming!

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Okay, so here we go with the Gyro conversion I've been working on. Decided to take a couple of snaps before I went any further and dropped it/ruined it with a terrible paint-job or something else tragic. I can't take credit for the sentinel cockpit idea, picked it up from some of the fine lads over at Bugman's.

He's just completed a strafing run on the goblin below- I was going for something more dynamic than the "straight out of the box" mini.

Let me know what you think!

The gyro is shaping up nicely! Do you plan to add any detail to the rotors? Compared to the body details, they seem a bit bare.

I agree, though I can't quite sort out what kind of detail I could put *on* the rotor. Perhaps some thin plasticard strips for a reinforced look?

So much more sense. Thank you Metallifan. I always said Canadians were the great communicators. How else could they manage down Kandahar way with the rest of NATO?

On the perfumed wind

Whelp, it's only been about 8 months. Probably time for an update or something.

Had the Capital City Carnage GT to attend this weekend, and so cranked through a whole lot of painting to get ready for that. Here's where I got to:

Start off with a shot of the Army General, King Olaf Egillson. Quite how he is carried around with all that armor and stone is beyond me.

Bearer of the dreaded Strollaz Rune, we have this fine gentleman.

Responsible for anti-magic, there is the wild-eyed Hrodr "Zaki" Ottarson.

And responsible for running around like a naked crazy guy, is my beloved dragonslayer.

The old crabby guys who frequently find themselves baby-sitting exceedingly fragile runesmiths and BSBs.

The valiant hearthguard (hammerers), who provide 15 stubborn wounds and fear and terror protection to my king. The target of horrible amounts of spells and shooting.

The slayers- who meet frequent inglorious death, in their perpetual futile quest for something big and nasty to fight.

The miners- staking their claim on remote table quarters since 2009...

The Wyvern's Lament. Inspired by Flakkson's rune of seeking, it is a AAA bolt-thrower. Please note the spotter's target identification guide.

Old Woody. Painted ages ago, when I apparently had patience for woodgrain.

Hengil's Hawk- gyrocopter extraordinaire. Cloth and wood cockpits too fragile? Head to the 41st millenium and get some sentinel armor plates. I hear those are super-tough. A set of three mini-cannon pre-loaded with grapeshot give The Hawk a fine weapons payload, guaranteed to look impressive until you actually roll the dice to wound.

What's he looking at? It appears the night goblin didn't grant permission for a flyby of the tower...

What's the new hotness in Dwarven Engineering? Eight barrels my friend. One might expect this to result in doubled tabletop effectiveness. One might expect incorrectly. Painted in a rush to get ready for CCC. Such a rush that it's still moving too fast to be photographed properly...

Warriors. There's a lot of them. Some of these were actually painted in Afghanistan. That's about the most interesting thing I can say about that...

More warriors. I include these because I am feeling like I ought to be complete in my overview. So here they are- my shameful unit, painted 9 years ago, and no longer matching my army. I will paint another unit of 25 warriors to replace these guys. Sometime between now and the Horus Heresy.

Thanks for reading! Comments, praise, and criticism will be skimmed over, basked in, and wept over respectively.

@ Scarper: Thanks- the runesmith's beard and hair are snakebite leather, highlighted up through bleached bone. As you can see, I got a little sloppy on the last highlight but it came out okay. It looks closer to blond than any of the previous attempts in my original warriors unit. Yellow just doesn't look right.

@ Dysartes: Appreciate the comments. They do okay. The problem with putting all your shooting in the hands of a few war machines is that a couple of bad rolls turns the game. Not like Dark Elves where you can rely on averages to correct your buckets of shots... Always exciting though.

Hm. Well, it's been a long time. There's a couple other additions underway to the army, but I thought I'd bring these guys out since they're doing quite nicely for me in 8th. These were actually painted some time ago- maybe 5 years or so. They were certainly one of the first units prepped for the army. I'm hoping to bulk out the unit, but in the meantime, here's a pic of my rangers:

I'm happy with the concept, but think I could do it better the second time around. I've been meaning to touch them up, but I keep getting requests in batreps to post pics of them, so here they are.
