Subject: Can you run within 18" of an enemy?

I remember seeing talk about how you can't run within 18" of an enemy model for a long time. In a game today it was challenged and looked up in the book. In the little box at the top of I think page 19 (my BRB is at a friend's currently) it had no distance restriction like that.
Can "run" be used within 18" and if so, why did I read so often it couldn't be used? Did it change or was I just reading it wrong/something else by mistake?

"I drive a big car, cuz I'm a big star. I'll make a big rock-and-roll hit." "I am a big car, and I'm a strip bar. Some call it fake, I call it good-as-it-gets."
I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent. |

There is nothing in the rules saying that enemy units' proximity keeps your units from running.
You might be thinking about fantasy and marching.

Run can be used within 18" of enemy models, yes. Otherwise having fleet would be pretty useless.
You may be thinking of the Infiltrate USR (p75). "Infiltrators may be set up anywhere on the table that is more than 12" from any enemy unit, as long as no deployed enemy unit can draw a line of sight to them... they may be set up anywhere on the table that is more than 18" from any enemy unit, even in plain sight."

I do vaguely remember a run rule in 2nd ed, where you couldn't run it you were within 8" of an enemy, maybe that/s where some of the confusion is coming from.

Well Fleet would be totally useless if you couldnt run in 18 inches.

Well I understood that run was used to close the gap to get into firing range and fleet let you "run" within 18" and assault after "run"ing.
Run and Fleet moves being two different things.
No idea where I got mixed up but thanks for clearing this up.

Fleet just allows a model "To assault after running"
