well, you could prime white and spam with washes. There's also a couple video guides on Youtube I think. Might try there.

... because that totally makes sense.

I painted mine in a black to grey scheme in an attempt to make them similar to Aliens.

Bleached bone for the main body. Necro Abyss for the Claws etc. Then Lich Purple or Warlock Purple for the Veins if your models have them.

Here is a very easy and VERY good looking way to paint tyranids fast.

White base coat.

Testor's glossy black ( thin it first )

apply paint !

It'll look great.

Tyranids have so many painting options, more than any other race in 40k.

I gathered some nice examples form other painters in this gallery.

Hope it inspires you as much as it does me.

I haven't got an answer to that as such but i do want to say this. I started collection Tyranids about 6 years ago now. When i did i looked through the codex & started painting my Nids in the Behemoth colour scheme. Now, some many years later & probably 1000's of pound too, i really wish that i had thought a bit more about my colour scheme before i had started painting them! I do still like my colour scheme, but it's not original.
I have seen some really cool Yellow & black ones. Kinda fits well with the whole 'insect mind' thing too i think. Also, green colours seem to work well.
Above all, keep it simple. You will probably have hundreds of Gaunts to paint so you really wanna be knocking them out in groups of 8-16 at once.
Cheers.

Fast and SUPER nice is a dipping method. Nids are by far, the best army to dip. Its as simple as getting 2 or 3 colors. Prime the minis, paint the skin color A in block form. Paint the chiton in paint B in block form. Do your details (eyes and such) and then dip.
To dip, buy some minwax floor wax in a shade you like (chestnut is a nice one) hold the base with some pliers, dip into the wax base deep, pull out and lightly shake the mini getting excess wax off. BAM! your done. Best part is, they go from looking bad and block painted, to looking really nice. Only on nids lol

Here is what I was talking about. These arnt mine, but it totally shows how it looks before and after.

I do not mind. I do not play Nids. So long as I never see another Tau army out there painted Black and Dark Angels green with Bleached bone and earthy colors I will be fine.

Tyranid color schemes? One word...

Drybrushing

That is, if you want them to come out as the dark and scary flavor. If you want to go with vibrant, Drybrush schemes are not your friend, and you're better off going with a two or three tone base.

Amen for drybrushing! The above Hormagaunt was painted with shading... here is the drybrushed variant that took a third as long to paint (production model):

That's Drybrushed? Nicely done, it looks like you just used standard method. I Drybrushed a Warrior for my buddy as he wanted to switch to a nocturnal theme, so I left a lot of recessed areas (Ribcage, Recesses between head plates, etc...) Black. It worked out really well in the end, and gave it a good sense of shadowing, as if it were standing in the dark.

EDIT: Alright, if I can find the Warrior discussed above, I can snap a shot and send it to you Deadrat, and it'll give you an idea of a dark organic color scheme.

i like that its pretty sick

mine are all different combinations of blood red, purple, and black
different kinds of broods have different schemes, but the colors hold them together as an army
