I am a noob in an escalation league which includes my army of Lizardmen and an army of High Elves, Dark Elves, and Vampire Counts. Eventually I know bolt throwers will appear on the table. I want to tailor a unit that can deal directly with this threat. I'm torn between a Cold One Calvary w/Sun Standard of Chotec or Terradon Riders. With the riders I can take an extra one for every 6 as opposed to the Cold Ones, plus they are treated as skirmishers and they could reach the thrower by turn 2. On the other hand I'll get the neg to hit from the standard on the Cold Ones plus a 4+ armor save but it could be turn 3 before I make it there. Any opinions?

Terradons are better for hunting war machines because they are faster, can't be blocked in and don't have to wheel around.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)
Adepticon 2011- Combat Patrol Best General

Thanks, that was kinda the direction I was leaning mainly for that reason. The cavalry would be uglier once it got into close combat with them, but getting there would be the big issue.

Cold one cav are massive overkill for warmachine duty.

Use the teradons.

even 3 terradons can handle most crew; you're pretty much guaranteed the outnumber, and 3 S3 and 3 S4 attacks are usually enough for a kill or two.

Combine this with the 20" move and the ability to hop to a central forest piece for shooting immunity and you'll do just fine. Now, if you run into a dwarven master engineer or blood cauldron crew and the like, that's an entirely different problem.

And do not forget drop rocks. If possible, charge on machine in a way that passes over another, which you drop rocks on. From a unit of 3 Terry's, that is an average of 6 rocks, of which 2 hit crew. Against elves, that is most likely 2 kills (As 2/3 wound), de-crewing that machine. You will then most likely whipe out the other crew, takeing out 2 machines in 1 move.
