I started 40k in october last year and was recently inroduced to fantasy
I'm stating a High Elves army for 3 reasons; i like elves in pretty much anything, i like dragons, and i like mages.
however, im having a hard time making a list (2250) as i can't decide on what units to take or how big the units should be
Ideas ive been throwing around;
1. 2 dragon mages
2. white lions as a bodygaurd for a mage
3. 3 great eagles for march-blocking and anti-warmachine
4. 2 blocks of 21 sea gaurd with bows to stand and shoot then counter with three ranks of attacks for holding

any advice on units and opinions on my above ideas?

p.s. i know repeater bolt throwers are amazing and yes im taking one.

Have you considered Phoenix Guard as a defensive unit to hold your mage instead of white lions? The ward save can make them rather difficult to dispose of.

Dragon mages are something that you should be using when you have more experience with HEs... they can dish out alot of shooting (magic missile and breath) attacks and terror but sneeze at him and he will die.

White lions need to be in combat. Mages do not.
The standard mage pit is one of the 2 archer units invariably bought for a 2250 point army.
2 eagles and 2 repeater bolt throwers is a more standard set up. if you need 3 eagles to redirect you need to really practice, or you have a very specific plan for multiple redirection.
The rear ranks won't be shooting, so if you went 7 wide you would only get to stand and shoot with those 7.
Lothern sea guard are the weakest core IMHO, they are a dual purpose unit, but the single purpose units (arhers and spears) do their job so much better because you plan for them to do that job from the start.

2250:
Prince, barded horse, dragon armour (unless magic armour), magic items to suit)
Noble, BSB, BATTLE BANNER!!!!, lance, shield, dragon armour.
2 level 2 mages (items to suit)
x2 10 man units of archers (musos)
2 RBTs
2 Eagles
2 x5 model units of Dragon princes, full command, war banner on one (this unit gets the BSB) and banner ellyrion on the other (this unit gets general).
15 White lions Banner full command.

This leaves you about 150 pointrs to either add banner to the WLs, add another unit (Lion chariot, or unit of shadow warriors, or even 10 swordsmasters) as you see fit.

Hits like a brick, works in all phases, and the Unit of Dragon princes with standard, war banner, BSB and battle banner generates +4-9 cobat resolution before any dice are rolled.... WOW!

Just out of curiosity, how would you see this sort of list acting against gunline dwarves setting up at the very edge of their deployment zone with cannons on a hill? I've proxied HE a few times against my friend's dwarf army, but they either shoot down any units before they can be effective or they beat my CC specialists in close combat.

Elves in general fold like a deck of cards against gunlines.

Dwarven gunlines rip through elves without effort, it isn't pretty or fun.
Just how much of a gunline is he running though? A few units? 40 riflemen? 8 war machines?

Here is what i've been also toying with if it help you out. Of note i've been playing GT/tournment level for about 3 years now in fantasy, and for about 10 in 40k. I'm not pretending its all that, but for introing myself into high elves its doable. I'm staying away from magic, because I played skaven exclusively for 3 years, skaven were an excellent army to play at GT level for learning value. They teach you the importance of combat res, flanking, and movement.

That being said, in building the army I stayed way from the D6 banner and the star dragon. I wanted something slightly different, but still consider strong enough to compete. I'll struggle vs some builds IE high end demons/vc, but can compete vs mid demons/ lower VC which was the goal. Match ups vs Dwarves would be rough, and Empire would be challenging to say the least.

Prince, Starlance, Dragon Armor, Shield, Barded Steed, Vambrances defense
Mage, lv 2, Barded Steed, scroll x2
Noble, lance, dragon armor, shield, barded steed, bsb, warbanner

I will for sure be going with the 2 10elve archers for mage pits, and one unit of 5 dragon princes, but are multiple units of dragon princes really neccesary?
Also, how are dragon mages and noble's on griffons as apposed to dragons?
And are swordmasters and white lions worth it?

also, what about shadow warriors?
