Boulder

The terrain was mediocre at best. No large blocks of trees and very little in the way of LoS blocking materials. I think there was maybe 1 piece of terrain on all three boards I played on that was large enough for a Land Raider to hide behind. Most of the rest of the terrain was black primed Cities of Death stuff they had been building for the event. I won't say it was the worst terrain I have ever played on, but it sure wasn't great. Slightly under the quality of the stuff Valhalla's has in terms of game play, and way under in terms of visual appeal.

I think there was a total of 16 players there? We were corralled in the basement of the store; it was kind of poorly lit and looked like it was a storeroom that they had cleared out to make space. The stairs were a pain in the ass! I think everyone who wasn't a regular nearly killed themselves on the top stair (it was about half an inch taller than the rest of the staircase). It was blistering hot, and a little too humid. I think I went through about a gallon of water while playing alone! It was so hot in fact that someone began to feel bad as a result of it
My list

Vulkan

Grey Knight Grandmaster Hood Iron Halo

5 Thunder Hammer Terminators

Dedicated Land Raider Redeemer

2 Dreadnoughts with Twin-Linked Lascannon and Heavy Flamer

2 5 man tactical squads with Combi-melta and Razorback

2 ten man tactical squads with Flamer, Power weapon and Razorback

10 man tactical squad with Meltagun, Power fist and Razorback (Vulkan rides with these guys)

2 pairs of Multi-Melta Attack Bikes

2 Predators with Twin-Linked Lascannon

Round one
5 Objectives, one has to be placed in the center of the map, the others a split evenly between the players deployment zones. Setup is 12" long board edges with turn one night fight. Game length was six turns.

He had

A lord on Destroyer body with Phylactery and Phase Shifter

A lord on foot with Res Orb and Veil of Darkness

10 Immortals (Hung out with Lord on foot)

3 12 man units of Warriors

11 man unit of Warriors

3 5 man units of Destroyers

Monolith

I won the roll to decide who picks, and made him choose and go first since it was a set game length. He deployed one unit of warriors on his back left to hold one of his two objectives (both were in ruined buildings), he put another unit of warriors near the middle of his deployment zone to hold his other objective. A third unit went between the two previous units to hold a rocky outcropping. The Lord on foot and immortals deployed in front of them. The three units of Destroyers set up at roughly equal intervals a few inches back from the starting Line. The Destroyer Lord hid behind the Necrons in the middle and the last unit of warriors went to his far right. The ‘Lith deepstruck.

I placed both my Objectives on my far left as close together as possible. I setup my two missile teams on top of them with support from My whole army save Vulkan, the Land Raider and Terminators and a Flamer team, who all got deployed on the middle right to power forwards and take his far objective. I put the Multi-Melta team as far forwards was safe (in cover) to rush the center objective.

I stole the initiative and powered forwards, I managed to get about 2 inches away from the center objective after a good run roll with the Multi-Melta team and all my transports moved up between 6” and 12”. I knocked down 3 destroyers but not much else due to night fight.

His turn 1.
He moved forwards with the Destroyers, all but one of the ones I had dropped got back up. Not much happened, he stunned a few tanks, shook a few more. But he did manage to immobilize the Redeemer.

My turn 2.
I deployed the terminators from the Redeemer and moved towards the Destroyers that had immobilized their transport. I pushed forwards with everything and ran a shaken Razorback up next to his unit of warriors holding his right Objective. I charged his Lord on foot and the immortals with a Dreadnought. I killed all the Destroyers out of the center unit with concentrated fire from the left half of my army, and downed 3 more from the far right unit. The Terminators were just within charge range of the last unit of Destroyers and completely demolished them! I massacred further into his lines. The Dreadnought downed two immortals, but they passed their test and held.

His turn 2.
The ‘Lith struck almost middle of the board towards the far left side, but did nothing with its whip! The last unit of Destroyers moved up and shot at my troop’s squad holding my right objective. Concentrated fire from his army resulted in that unit being whittled down to a single man, who subsequently fled of the table. The two warrior units near the terminators moved into Rapid fire range and put a wound on the Grey Knight and killed the Sergeant and one other Terminator, luckily they did not fail their break check. The Destroyer Lord charged one of my Attack bike pairs and killed a single bike. However he already had two wounds on him from past shooting. The surviving bike failed to wound him back and also stayed in combat. The Immortals Veiled out behind the Destroyer Lord.

My turn 3.
The Grey Knight broke off from the Terminators and charged one of the two warrior squads that have been shooting at him. The Terminators charged the other warrior squad and were supported by the flamer squad that had been Following Vulkan up the table edge. The Grey Knight killed half the squad and took no damage in return; he was also safely encased in a bubble of Necrons preventing the Destroyer Lord from reaching him! The Terminators and Flamer team killed off the warrior squad on his far Objective. The Flamer team stayed put to hold it, while the Terminators massacred back towards the center of the table. Vulkan was also in Range, but I didn’t want to commit him to that fight. Instead he got out and charged the Lord on foot and the Immortals accompanied with his Fist/Melta squad. One of the Dreads charged the last trio of Destroyers and killed one, but they didn’t run. I failed to do anything other than stun the ‘Lith, and Moved my farthest up transport (holding 5 guys with a Combi-Melta up to range for contesting his last Objective. The Destroyer Lord killed the last combatant and massacred towards the terminators.

His turn 3.
The Destroyer Lord Turbo-boosted to get to the combat with the terminators and the warriors in the ruins on his other objective fired into my Multi-Melta team killing one. The ‘Lith again failed to do anything and was stunned so it couldn’t move. The Lord with the Immortals shot the Flamer Team in the Ruins on his far objective, and killed 2 of the remaining 4 marines. The Destroyer Lord charged the terminators and was beaten to a bloody pulp. My opponent tried to pull a fast one on me and said he had a Warscythe, but I had read his list looking for that and he hadn’t paid for it, nor was it written on the list! The Grey Knight killed more Necrons, but they didn’t run! Dreadnought in combat with last two Destroyers failed to kill them.

My Turn 4.
I Moved the Terminators into combat with the Lord on foot and the Immortals to help out Vulkan. The Dreadnought again failed to kill the Destroyers, but he did get one. The combined shooting of my army had no effect on the ‘Lith at all! The Grey Knight killed the last of his target unit. The Terminators and Vulkan Broke the Lord on foot and his last couple of immortals and Ran them down like dogs! The Terminators consolidated in between the Grey Knight and the Unit of warriors on his last objective. Vulkan (now minus his squad after some bad saves!) moved to support my Flamer squad on his far Objective.

His Turn 4.
The Dammed Destroyer Lord got back up with full wounds remaining! He then charged and killed one guy from the Flamer squad near Vulkan. The warriors near the Terminators fire everything they had at them, but failed to cause any damage. The Warrior squad on his far right moved up behind the immortals, he was planning on contesting my left objective with them in another turn. Dreadnought again fails at killing the Destroyer! The ‘Lith immobilizes both my Predator near it and the Razorback contesting his lone Objective!

My Turn 5.
Dreadnought fails again! The Other Dreadnought gets close enough to charge the ‘Lith and Stuns it. Terminators rejoin the Grey Knight and charge the warrior squad holding his only objective, pulling them off it and killing about half of them. Vulkan Charges the Destroyer Lord and they fail to do anything to each other.

His Turn 5.
Destroyer Lord and Vulkan continue to fight; Vulkan puts a single wound on the lord as does the last remaining Flamer marine, Lord sticks. Dreadnought finally kills the last Destroyer and the other Dread stuns the ‘Lith again. Last untouched warrior squad moves up and kills two guys out of the squad holding my left objective. Terminators Finish off the middle warrior squad and consolidate towards the ‘Lith.

My Turn 6.
We already know he is going to phase at the start of his turn, so I make a grab for all the objectives and kill the Destroyer Lord and Immobilize the ‘Lith.

His Turn 6.
Phase out! Max victory points for me! Plus all the Bonus points!

After everyone was done we walked over to smash burger and had lunch with another guy who was playing in the tournament (can’t remember his name though).

Round two!

Mission is Dawn of war, minus the night fight. Mission is modified kill points. HQs that use up a slot are worth 5KP, Troops, Dedicated Transports; HQs that don’t use a slot are worth 1KP. FA, Heavy, and Elites are worth 2KP.

This is the mission I was most concerned about; the modified KP was really going to hurt me if I played someone with only 1 HQ unit.

Opponent is playing a very similar Mech Vulkan List. I don’t remember his list totally but it was something like this.

Vulkan

Terminator Squad with chain fist and Heavy Flamer in Regular Land Raider

Terminator Assault Squad 5x Hammers in a Redeemer

2 Tactical Squads with Lascannon and Flamers in Razorbacks

2 Tactical Squads with Fist, Melta and Multi-Melta in Rhinos

2 Pair of Multi-Melta Attack bikes

2 Vindicators

He won the roll and chose me to go first

I put my Multi-Melta team up as far forward as I could in a crater. And a missile team at the center line to the left of them in a wooded hill. He put two Razorbacks behind a large building in the center of the board.

My turn 1.
Not much, moved everything on, Turboed the Attack Bikes behind the hill in my far left and blew the guns off a Razorback.

His turn 1.
About the same, moved on all his stuff, used Rhinos to cover his Attack Bikes and brought both vindicators and the Regular Land Raider only on 6”. His Landraider failed to do anything along with the rest of his army.

My turn 2.
Epic Fail on the part of my heavy weapons. Seems like the whole game I couldn’t get more than a two to hit or damage his light tanks. I didn’t really do anything to him. I think I shook the Regular Land Raider. And wounded an Attack bike!

His turn 2.
Thanks to his weird setup and complete lack of anything stronger than a Heavy Bolter at greater than 36” he was forced to move up. He killed a Razorback but didn’t harm the squad inside. He took the bait with his Landraider, but he forgot to deploy!

My turn 3.
Had a major rules argument with him about how you pull casualties from a multi wound unit when one causes Instant Death and the other doesn’t. He insisted he could put the Multi-Melta wound on the wounded attack bike and the bolter save on the other. Finally after the judge said he was wrong and I quoted him the rulebook he backed down. Surprisingly he calmed way down and was very amicable even after all this! I thought for sure we were going to his pucker factor 9! I killed all his attack bikes and put some more Hurt on his transports, unfortunately it only amounted to a few stunned and Shaken results and a couple of lost Storm Bolters! I did move towards his land raider with one of my Combi-Melta teams, in their Razorback. I was hoping to bait his Terminators into taking the charge on the cheap unit so I could swarm them with AP2 hits, and it worked! He lost 3 terminators after I killed his Land raider and they failed their check!. The Attack bikes that had been hiding behind the hill on my left Turboed up along the board edge next to his vindicator.

His turn 3.
He did kill the Razorback and most of the squad inside, but the Combi-Melta was sitting 3” from the front of the Landraider! Both Vindicators moved up and killed one of the attack bikes. Rhinos finally move forwards and shoot down the guys who killed the Land Raider. Terminator rally and move back towards the fight.

My turn 4
Attack Bike killed a vindicator! Moved up the Redeemer and dropped the Terminators and Grey Knight and popped a Rhino. The Terminators failed their charge and were left out in the open!

His turn 4.
He moved up his Redeemer to peak round a corner of the center building and immobilized Vulkan’s transport. The Squad who’s Rhino I had destroyed moved around and combined forces with another tactical squad to shoot down 2 terminators. The Lascannon in his back field that had no LoS to anything prior now shot down the attack bike that killed the vindicator.

My Turn 5.
I moved Vulkan’s squad (but not Vulkan) out in front of his Redeemer and blocked his front hatch. I then moved a Razorback to block his left hatch, and he had already blocked his right hatch by being up against the building. One Melta shot later he had to emergency disembark with his Thunder Hammer Terminators and his Vulkan! My Redeemer fired its Flamestorm cannons killing 10 tactical marines from two squads. The Grey Knight and Terminators then removed the larger of the two surviving squads.

His Turn 5.
His main assault unit was trapped from the emergency disembark so he didn’t really have much to do! He moved the three surviving marines from the Redeemer attack out of charge range of my terminators and didn’t really do anything else.

My turn 6.
Not a lot happened. I killed another tank and tried to break his Terminators.

His turn 6.
He killed a Razorback with Vulkan and the Terminators

Result.
Minor win for me, I was only 3 KP shy of getting a massacre! If I had been able to kill just another tank or another transport or two I would have put myself squarely in the lead. But alas I couldn’t get my heavy weapons to hit anything for more than half the game. Honestly I think this game was a forgone conclusion before it started. He should never have gotten across the midline had my Heavy weapons actually been doing their job. As it was he was totally outranged and outclassed tactics wise. He for some reason thought I would push forwards towards him and lose my range advantage. Afterwards he said it was his most frustrating game ever, because I stayed out of range for most of the game, and he was totally unprepared for that style of play.

Round three was table quarters with one objective placed squarely in the center of the table quarters that were NOT being used to deploy in. I think this is a great scenario, with one minor alteration. There needed to be another objective in the center of the table to make it harder to get ties. Secondary was normal KP.

Dan’s list

2 Princes with MoS and Lash

9 Berzerkers with 3 plasma pistols a power sword and Melta Bombs on
the Champion.

2 10 man squads of Chaos Marines with Mark of Khorne Fist Plasma and
Lascannons in Rhinos with Combi-Meltas

2 10 man squads of Chaos Marines with Mark of Chaos Glory Fist Plasma
and Lascannon

2 7 man units of Lesser Daemons

Landraider with Possession

2 trios of Obliterators

I think Dan won the roll off and made me choose. I chose a deployment zone almost devoid of terrain except a large bunker with a tower near my farthest back corner and a crater along my long board edge straddling the middle line.

I deployed my Multi-Melta team in the crater and both missile teams into the bunker, one on a lower firing platform and one in the tower. I put the Redeemer, both Dreadnoughts a Predator, a Flamer team and a Combi-Melta team on my right flank and everything else on the left. Both attack bike squadrons were placed behind the Bunker tower for cover and reserves.

Dan put his Landraider near the center of his deployment to counter my Redeemer; he put both Obliterator teams on a large stepped Hill/Ruin deal in the back of his deployment zone. He put one of his Khorne Marine squads in a Rhino on his left flank and the other on his right flank. Both princes were hidden behind the Land Raider. Dan had two small Daemons squads in reserve, a squad of Chaos Glory Marines on the hill with Obliterators and another identical squad on his left flank in a crater. The Berzerkers were in his Landraider.

My Turn 1.
I blew off one of the Lascannons on the Land Raider and Killed an Obliterator. I moved out and took control over the objective to my right and got about half way to the objective on my left. Not much else happened this turn. I moved my Attack Bikes out, one towards each Objective.

Dan’s Turn 1.
He moved the Land Raider forwards and fired a Lascannon at my Redeemer. He did nothing; he then fired all his Obliterators at my Redeemer and Immobilized and stunned it. He moved both Rhinos forwards and popped smoke on them, he also moved his Marines in the Crater towards the objective on my left.

My Turn 2.
I fired a bunch of Lascannons at Dan’s Land Raider eventually killing it and forcing the Berzerkers to disembark. I blew of the Combi-Melta in the Rhino to Dan’s left and Killed another Obliterator. Attack Bikes continued to move towards the Objectives

Dan’s Turn 2.
One of Dan’s Daemon squads deepstruck and charged a Razorback, I think he shook it? Dan fired more Obliterators at the Redeemer and shook it again. The Rhino to Dan’s left moved just barely into range of the Redeemers Flamestorm cannons, while the Rhino to his right moved hesitantly towards my troops holding the objective to his right. The Berzerkers moved forwards and the Princes moved up to follow them still hiding behind the wreck of the Land Raider. Both Princes tried to Lash my Attack Bikes forwards but the Hood on the Grey Knight stopped them.

My Turn 3.
I dropped the Flamer team on my right flank to kill the Daemons assaulting my Razorback, a quick burst of flame and they were all banished back to the warp! I Killed another Obliterator and Immobilized Dan’s Rhino attacking my right flank. Vulkan and his accomplices moved into position in their transports to claim the left field objective. I think I put a wound on a Daemon Prince also.

Dan’s Turn 3.
Dan moved his Berzerkers forwards and disembarked the Khorne marked marines from their Rhino. They moved into a ruin near the Redeemer. The Obliterators stunned the Redeemer again while the Chaos Glory marked marines in the crater moved towards the objective on Dan’s right (my leftfield objective). The Chaos Glory marked marines in the stepped ruins/hill began to move towards the same objective. Dan Lashed the attack bikes near my right field objective in front of the Redeemer and charged them with the Berzerkers. Dan killed one bike and the other stayed in combat. The Second Daemon squad is summoned and charges the Flamer squad that killed the first. Three marines are killed and only 1 Daemon, luckily I passed the leadership and they remain in combat!

During Dan’s Turn the TO came around and told everyone that we only had 30 minutes left, this caused both of us to be fairly rash as we thought we probably wouldn’t be able to get through to turn 5. As it turns out the TO was off by about 40 minutes! We had enough time to play all 6 turns

My turn 4.
The Terminators disembarked out the side of the Redeemer and moved over the center hill to simo charge the Berzerkers and one of the princes. Vulkan and his squad moved out of their transport to attack the Chaos Glory marked unit that had contested the objective to my left. Through a massive effort of combined fire I killed another Obliterator and one of the Daemon Princes. The Redeemer killed 4 of the Khorne marked Chaos Marines in the ruins in front of it. The Grey Knight and Terminators charged the Berzerkers and the Grey Knight managed to get into combat with the remaining Prince. Dan promptly hit 4 times wounded 4 times, and I failed 3 saves killing the Grand Master! The Terminators didn’t fair much better! They lost two of their number and were only able to kill 3 Berzerkers. They passed their test and remained in combat. Vulkan and his buddies killed more than half of the squad they charged and lost one or two guys in return. Dan’s marines stayed put. I continue to slug it out with the Daemons despite being down to only 2 marines!

Dan’s turn 4.
Obliterators fired at the Redeemer, but they failed to damage it. The Khorne Marked Marines near Vulkan and the objective on my left got out of their transport and wiped out my 5 Man Flamer team holding the Objective. The Khorne Marked Marines near the Redeemer tried to get out of range by assaulting a nearby Razorback and killing it. Vulkan finished off the last of the squad he was fighting while only losing 2 men himself. The Prince and the Berzerkers finished off the Terminators in an embarrassing fight. The Berzerkers the massacred in front of the Redeemer and the Prince went straight down the middle towards my Dreadnoughts. 6 Daemons remained combat with my 2 marines!

My Turn 5.
Through tank shocking I positioned the Khorne marine squad near the Redeemer into perfect flame position, of the seven that were there, only one survived, the same happened to the Berzerkers thanks to the Machine Spirit, the Daemon Prince in my deployment zone was wounded twice and charged by both Dreads, it promptly turned one into paste and the other failed completely. Vulkan and his two palls charge and massacre the second squad of Chaos Glory marines nearby, retreating back into cover to prepare for the inevitable assault from the 9 Khorne Marked marines nearby. 5 Daemons remain in the assault near my bunker at the end of the turn.

Dan’s turn 5.
The remaining Obliterators fire at the Redeemer and Shake it again and Blow of the Multi-Melta. The Prince spectacularly destroys the second Dreadnought and the Khorne marked marines return to their transport to contest the objective on my left, they also shoot out of the top hatch and kill both of Vulkan’s squad mates. Down to only 4 Daemons now in the clash of titans going on in my deployment zone!

My Turn 6.
Prince is downed by the missiles from the two tactical teams in the bunker. I think this was the first time all day one of those missiles actually did anything. Vulkan positions himself near the rear of the Khorne marines transport and I blow it open. Vulkan then Flames and charges them killing 5! The Redeemer kills the last Berzerker and a Razorback kills the last marine near my Right-hand objective. The last of the Daemons dies finally!

Dan’s turn 6.
The last three Obliterators fail again to damage the Redeemer, Vulkan wipes out the last couple of marines he is fighting and consolidates back onto the objective.

End Result, Massacre with 2 of four possible bonus points.

This meant my total was 60 Battle points for the day, beating out the next person for 1st by a single point! Third was actually a tie between my round two opponent and a Dark Eldar player, but my round two opponent was gracious enough to give it to the other guy since he couldn’t make it to the semifinals. After those two was Dan with 39points. I found it interesting that Dan was able to place 5th out of 16 even after getting slaughtered in the last round. Kind of shows how far the leaders pack was spread out from everyone else after round two!

Nice job man! Good to see the Emperor's Finest repping.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).
