Recently I purchased an original Game Boy. The second piece of gaming technology I ever owned right after the NES. I found it sitting under glass at a flea market in Pendergrass. Nostalgia instantly came rushing back to me. So, on a whim, I asked to check it out. It was in full functioning order the only problem it has is loose springs and I could fix that myself. So I bought it and a couple games. The games are also pretty relevant to my childhood. My first game, Mario and my favorite game at the time, pokemon Red. remember it being red because I liked Squirtle much more than Charmander and I always hated that on the title screen that Charmander came up first. I also bought the N64 game Mischief Makers as well.
That night after a couple of attempts at Mario, it finally happened. I got to the final stage and beat the last boss! I flipped out, my family and friends were asking me if everything was ok. I could finally tell every my ordeal. For how I pined for 14 years to beat Mario. The game that made me, as a child, pull my hair out and literally bang my head on tables. I beat it in under an hour. I couldn't believe it. Now I'm on this stint of buying old gameboys and old gameboy games, mostly pokemon and Pokemon stadium. As the first two pokemon series games (Red & Blue, Gold & Silver) are my favorites. I can't wait to go back to Pendergrass and take a delve into getting a gameboy color.
So what this thread is really about is old video games and coming back to them as adults. How many of you have gone back and played a game you played when you were a kid? Did you make you feel awesome to beat it, or just dumb for not being able to as a kid?
Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.
I went back and played X-Wing not too long ago. Man was that a pain in the ass, given no manual for the input at the start(it was a way LucasArts did to keep people from turning it into ShareWare. It asked for a specific combination of symbols that corresponded to a certain page).
But anyways, I was playing the B-Wing expansion and finally beat the thing that plagued me as a child.
I finally killed The Executor with an A-Wing, ala Return of the Jedi.
Last year I found an old copy of Full Throttle (Speaking of LucasArts) and got it working on my computer. I could never get through the last sequence as a kid. But hell I still love that game. Wish they would make a sequel.

I recently found my copy of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. It's really annoying because you can't select more than one unit at a time.
My friend also gave me his old Sega Master system. Now I can finally play Mortal Kombat on the TV.
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Actually, you should be able to select up to a whopping four units at a time. I think you have to hold down the shift button and click on each unit, but it's been awhile since I've played.
I used to love Warcraft.

You could select a staggering nine units at once. But to use abilities, you had to select an individual, which is really hard in the heat of battle.

And yet Warcraft 3 failed to improve on that number.

Being able to select a limited number of units is pretty much a trademark of Blizzard's RTS designs.
It's all about the control groups baby.
I haven't gone back and revisited any older titles mainly because I sold all my stuff about a year or two. Had everything from an NES to an Xbox and I got rid of it. I really felt better after that when I realized I simply didn't care to become a collector.
About the only older games I play these days are ones I never played during the time they were released.

You can't select more than twelve units at once in WarCraft III? I honestly can't remember the number.
To be fair though, WarCraft III tends to have a lower unit count that StarCraft, so it doesn't matter that much. Plus as has already been said, control groups.
I know, I know, but why should there be a limit in the first place? Why can't I select my whole army and tell them to go somewhere all at once?

Look no further than Freespace 2. Most Epic game ever made. It's only 10 years old I admit, but before the company went under, they made the engine open source, and there is a HUGE mod community, with tons of updated graphics and engine improvements.

If you can ever get your hands on it, Duke Nukem 3D is well worth it. Boy, that's fun, and the humour and one-liners can keep you going when you're bored.
Or you can go even further back and try to get your mitts on Doom. That's great fun, but try playing it on Nightmare. That difficulty is so hard that it comes with a warning:
Are you sure? This difficulty isn't even remotely fair.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri - BEST. GAME. EVER. I Loved playing the Human Hive and rushing 30 infantry at my opponents. Infantry, Choppers, Tanks, Vehicles all coming at ya for the glory of Chairman Sheng-ji Yang.
That game has the best quotes and best diplomacy interaction to this day. Not even Civilization beats it.
