Like the title says, I'm trying to figure out what some of the most common Vulkan builds are (specifically at 2500 points), and what people think their strengths and weaknesses are. Some of the ones I've seen/heard of are:

Drop Pod Vulkan
Landraider/Termie Spam Vulkan
Bike Vulkan
Dread/Speeder/Pred Vulkan

I'm trying to refine my Vulkan list, but was curious as to what some of the viable options were. Also, do most people think it's important to bring some long-ranged fire, or is it best to just overload on TH/MM/HF and just try to get in close and dismantle the opponent? What other HQs complement him the best? Do Tacticals need to load up on combi weapons to make it work, or are the basic weapons enough? How does it handle SAFH or CC Hordes? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You should have enough flamers to handle the hordes. The rest, its up to your play style, any can be effective, just take into consideration your local meta.

The key to remember is that just because it is "vulkan" doesn't mean its an auto win. You still have to play smart and not leave you rear hanging out in places it shouldn't be. You still want to play a solid "marine" list, just recognize the fact that your flamers and melta type weapons have an added benefit.

Me, I go the dread/speeder route because that is the models I have available. My army building cash is going to my mech IG right now. I think once I finish there, I will be looking to go the termie/raider route with some bike speeder support

I won my area ard Boys with this build:

Vulkan
Libby with avenger/null zone
6 TT/SS terminators 2 Lightning claw terminators in a heavy support Land raider crusader with extra armor & multimelta
5 TT/SS terminators with dedicated land raider redeemer with extra armor & multi Melta
10 man tac squad in rhino with flamer, multimelta, combi flamer powerfist
10 man tac squad in rhino with Melta gun, multimelta, combi Melta
5 man scout squad with combat blades, sgt has combi melta & power fist in a fast attack land speeder storm with multi melta
3 multi melta attack bikes
2 MM/HF Land speeders
Thunderfire
Vindicator with dozer blades

10 multi meltas sure help with armor and the null zone/terminators means surviving combat is pretty hard.

I might pull back on the terminators for some more flamers though to help deal with orks.

Tank shocking orks followed by flamers is great fun.
