I just got back from seeing the movie, and boy is it ominous. No need for a spoiler box, since I'm not going to ruin it for anybody. Let's just say that The Empire Strikes Back was a dance party in comparison. Still, it has me anxious for the Deathly Hallows, which I've heard is going to be two movies. Then all those esteemed British actors can take their piles of cash and fade once again into obscurity.

Same. I would hardly call this Harry Potter one, a "movie" it was more like an interlude. It hurt me to sit through it.

A dance party? I can't tell if that's a bad or a good thing.
I got back from seeing it (pre-booked tickets), and I thought it was excellent. Like the previous film, it didn't omit as much content from the books like the first three films did. I loved it, and I can't wait for Deathly Hallows.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

One of the plusses of the Harry Potter movies is the opportunities it gave to a whole slew of great British character actors. Someone like Dame Maggie Smith can do more acting with a slightly raised eyebrow than a lot of film actors manage in a lifetime.

To be honest I just haven't really liked any of these movies. I tried to read one of the books, but it was just juvenile for me, and the movies are as well (not to mention the terrible acting in the first movies).

I'm going tonight. It can't be as bad as the first night of Twilight. Seriously, I went to opening night of Twilight with my wife and her friends. Not happening again, ever. I did bring Munchkin though, and we're going to play Ninja Burger tonight as well.

Going to watch it on Sat hopefully, well if it isn't this week, it'll be next.
As to myself I was pretty anti Harry Potter until I actually got bored one day and read the first book. Now I like both what where the series of books, and the movies based on them.

The child actors were pretty good, I thought, but the direction and editing was a bit slack. Remember that most of them were only 12 when they did the first film.
It is a relatively juvenile series on the whole, but I enjoyed them.

To add a quick supplementary, wasn't The Da Vinci Code terrible?
A rotten, badly written book designed specifically as a high speed chase movie, and the movie was rotten anyway.

I actually really enjoyed the DaVinci Code (the book), but the movie was so awful in its pacing and storyline gaps that I was bored after the first half hour. I didn't even bother reading the next book because of the DaVinci code movie.

Well, the books start off VERY juvenile. Which I feel was a clever thing for her to do. As her writing improved so did the complexity of her story telling which leads in to the maturity of the characters. Overall, they're still pretty much about a teenagers but they are grappling with some serious issues (pain, loss, loneliness) but I enjoyed them.
The movies (especially the first two) not so much. I think of the movies as more of companion pieces to the books. I did just see the latest and enjoyed it. David Yates changed the tone of the ending but I think it actually makes it a bit better. Instead of a desperate tragedy/fight/chase/fight it is just an overall tragedy.
Frazzled wrote:...Star trek: Good, captured core of old series. Best described as fun....
I gotta disagree with Star Trek. Roddenberry cleverly disguised the hard Sci Fi of the original Star Trek series as an action show. It was a way to get his Science Fiction ideas (and those of Sci-Fi writers of the day) across to a broader audience. Abrams disguised his action movie as a Science Fiction film. Essentially, at its heart, the new Star Trek is just an action film with many of the 'Sci-Fi lite' elements too prevalent in TV and movies, lately. I didn't buy it.
Boy this seems like a rant. Sorry, I'm an old time Sci-Fi fan.

I disagree. Roddenberry always pitched STOS as Wagon train in space. Except for the usual jump the shark moments, I fail to see the difference.
We're talking Captain Kirk romping through the galaxy kicking butt like a captain in a young empire should. The used techese to explain away problems. Hard sci fi it was not.
