This probably has been answered somewhere before, but just as the title says I've got a number of both and use CSM, am I allowed in official tournaments and the like to use the ordinary space marines in the same suads as the chaos ones, also if I paint them nurgly colors, can I use them as plague marines as long as it's clear to the opponent what they are (such as coloring the rim of the bases, not using ordinary chaos marines and only plague marines for a death guard styled army, etc.)?

That's up to the opponent I would say no because there not real GW models so they would not let you use them in offical touraments.

I guess they could be used to show a chapter that has recently turned but you'll need to make sure you shove on some spikes, remove any puritan symbols/imperial eagles etc and make sure you don't put on any weapons that Chaos can't field.

Huh? Of course they're Citadel miniatures...
The question was if there would be trouble with a mix of SM and CSM models. If it looks like one army and uses one army list picked from one Codex there should be nothing to complain about. They're your models - you can paint them pink and field the Fluffy Bunnies chapter led by Captain Bugs Bunny (Shrike) if you want. But ask the tournament organisers if unsure.

It should be 100% fine .
Who ever made up the fluff to say the moment marines want to rebel , the whole army will get new spikes + paint scheme with a blink of an eye?
They all have to start somewhere right?

This is a great thread. I've been wondering about this as well... except the other way around. I want to use CSM as SM because they look right cool they do.

Its pretty common to use bits from both CSM and SM parts mixed in for CSM (not frequently the other way round from what I understand). The previous edition CSM codex had a renegade or traitor legion that had pretty much only had red lines through the aquilla to show 'they had been defaced'.
go for it!

Ah that's great, it's such a shame ordinary space marines don't look as cool as their chaos counterparts Automatically Appended Next Post: What about the plague marines? If I colored them nurgly could I use them as that?

Nothing looks as cool as chaos marines. Evil is just cooler.
yeah, nurgly is good, but try some modifications - green stuff boils, shallow holes in the armour, real dirty/weathering effects. All of it makes it very nurgly.
And search ebay for cheap chaos spike sprues. Or if your really looking to save money, toothpicks or combs are great sources of spikes/random blades.

100 % OK.
I have been playing with the thought of making Sons of Anteus (a chapter known to have mutated "My-mucles-are-huge" and "Im-not-fat-im-just-big-boned" glands, also known to be resistant to pain and injury) using the Chaos Space Marine codex as my list.
As I think all the spikes and skulls looks dorky, I'll be using regular marines as CSMs and "true-scale" marines as Plague Marines.
As long as you make it PERFECTLY clear what is what (to your opponent, not to you) your OK.

I would love to see that; it shows real ingenuity.
My CSM opponent fields only CSM minis, fluff-wise he plays a homemade, centuries-old chapter, resplendant with red and gold armour, spikes, trophies and all the kit and kaboodle.
A rencently turned renegade warband would look awesome.
You could use all stock Marine parts, rhinos, land raiders etc (not forgetting the limitations on Chaos tech), and just scratch off all the aquilas etc.
I think that would look rad.
You could of course field a SM army (using the current SM 'dex) to field a 'recently turned' SM chapter - without any of the Chaos rules.

i'd say use any marine models you want, just embellish them with paint and/or bits to make them look more chaotic. as tek said, you can be using the CSM rules for a chapter that recently turned away from the emperor's light (the astral claws and huron, for example). this most recent (unfortunately somewhat bland) codex stresses the new marine traitors over the old horus heresy ones. also, the siege of vraks book 1 from forgeworld has a whole story line where a bunch of alpha legion chaos marines landed on the planet to "help" the imperials break the seige of the renegade planet. after they landed, they switched sides. in order to fool the imperial there, they used standard marine armor without the extra chaos bling and then just repainted it when they revealed their true colors. (hey, i just made a pun!) as long as you put forth some effort and are consistent in it, the vast majority of people wouldn't have a problem with what you're proposing.

I actually like the idea of having chaos in the SM.... It makes it look like that unit is "turning" towards chaos. Now would a tournament organizer/ref let you get away with it? Prob not, but it does not hurt ot ask ahead of time. Would your friends let you get a way with it? Prob, at least mine would. In fact, just for fun to try out a Hive Tyrant when I was playing 'nids, they let me use a Dreadnaught.... lol... That was kinda fun...
On a side night, who else thinks it would be cool to have inducted (think like WH inducting IG or DH) Chaos in the space maries, but at a penalty and limited in scope like the WH are? I really do like the idea of a partially corrupted SM chapter on the field.
