"The horror!"..Infiltrating ratling scouts overlook the tyranid deployment...

The Flyrant deploys on his extreme left, beside him is the dakkarant and his TG retinue, with a unit of grey stealers behind them...1 unit of WN gaunts then deploy in a straight line, screening the blue and black units of stealers....the boomfex then anchors the nids right flank...1 gaunt hangs back to claim the objective at the ruins in his corner...

I hold 1 rough rider unit in reserve, and the ratlings infiltrating overlooking the nid lines....

Sir! It's crowded in here!

IG squad 1 and 3 deploy on the ruined castle building, with the CCS beside them...the griffon hides behind this structure, with the hydra nearby with a clear line of sight to the field...PCS 1 deploys to the left of the castle, with RR1 behind them...to the right, the armored fist squad deploys front with the veteran's chimera behind it, and IG squad 2 behind that...and the extreme right flank is headed by the bane wolf, with the PCS 2 chimera after that...all in all a very crowded zone!

I try, but fail, to seize the initiative....

Nid turn 1

The nids roar and rush forward, except the gaunt unit 1, who claims the objective! The black genestealers move to take out the ratlings, while the flyrant takes refuge in the vacant ruins on the IG extreme right. The boomfex tries to take out the bane wulf, but fails to do anything. Everything runs/fleets, the dakkarant and retinue taking shelter in the forest.

Yum yum, I sense ratling flesh! The black GS make a move towards the ratlings, while the nid lines rush forward!

The flyrant takes cover at the ruins in a move to flank the IG right, while the dakkarant hides in the forest, with the stealers behind

IG turn 1

Seeing the threat on the IG right, the bane wolf rushes forward to block the advance of the nids. PCS 2 and the veterans move near the ruins in order to deal with the flyrant, while the armored fist chimera moves forward, ready to shoot. Similarly, PCS 1 advances, with the rough riders behind it.

The shooting phase yields mixed results...the ratlings manage to inflict 1 wound on the dakkafex, the griffon proves accurate and kills some black stealers, and the bane wolf bathes the grey stealers in a mix of flamers and chemicals, killing 6. The flyrant however, shrugs through a lot of fire, just taking 1 wound. The dakkarant and his retinue also weathers the shooting, with the dakkarant and 1 TG taking a wound. The RR fleets forward, with their eyes set on the dakkarant next turn....

The chimeras move! Shooting all the way!

The dakkafax is wounded by the ratlings, while the griffon kills some black GS!

The grey GS feels the bane wolf's wrath! And the flyrant takes a wound!

Nid turn 2

Things become dramatic as the the nids put pressure on the IG lines. The flyrant decides that meat is better than metal, as it flies over the vehicles, intent on feasting on IG squad 2. The black genestealers clamber over the rocks and incline in order to reach the ratlings, and the dakkarant's retinue bursts from the forest, intent on carving up the veteran's chimera. Everything else moves forward, although the blue stealers are hampered by poor fleet rolls....

The dakkafex tries to shoot at the banewolf again, but the forest provides cover to it. The grey stealers prove to be more successful by immobilizing the bane wolf. The dakkafex and TG assault the chimera of the veterans, but do nothing but immobilize and stunning it!

Predictably, the black stealers eat the ratlings. The flyrant assaults IG squad 2, kills the guardsmen, but they hold!

Ratlings taste yummy....

The flyrant rushes IG squad 2, who holds!!!

IG turn 2

IG reserves come in as RR2 attempts to relieve the embattled IG squad 2 from the flyrant. PCS1 moves forward towards the black stealers, while RR1 moves straight towards the dakkafex. The veterans disembark into the small ruins, face to face with the dakkarant and retinue, while the armored fist and PCS 2 chimeras move to outflank the dakkarant.

The CCS successfully gives 3 orders (the second order was a double 1!) and the dakkarant and retinue is riddled with meltaguns, promothium, lasbolts of varied sizes, GL heavy bolter, and autocannon rounds. The end result is that 1 tyrant guard is blown away, with the other one down to it's last wound, and the dakkarant with 2 wounds. PCS 1 kills 3 more stealers with flame, and the banewolf melts 2 grey stealers to goo. The chimera crew is rattled and misses completely with its heavy mortar.

RR1 charges in, inflicts 2 wounds on the dakkafex, leaving it with 1 wound remaining! It kills 2 riders, and the combat is a draw! RR2 attempts to rescue IG squad 2, and although it manages to wound the flyrant it suffers 3 casualties in return. The squads refuse to run, especially in face of the regimental standard, and combat continues!

Close but not quite! RR1 fails to finish off the dakkafex!

The counterattack of the rough riders and veterans, wound, but fail to finish off the nid monstrous creatures! More black and grey stealers fall to flame and chemicals...

Nid turn 3

The nids press the action into the IG lines! The advancing gaunt unit moves and fleets forward into assault range of the CCS, while the blue stealers rush forward in order to rip the AF squad chimera to shreds. The black stealers also attempt to do the same to the PCS1 chimera, and the last grey stealers move to the flank of the banewolf in order to avoid the heavy flamer.

The dakkarant shoots 12 TL devourer shots into the veteran squad, who lose 4 members. The horror proves too much, and they flee!

The assault phase proves extremely bloody. The dakkafex kills 2 members of RR1, the last survivor flees, then consolidates up the hill. The black stealers just scratch the paint of the PCS1 chimera, the grey stealers getting the same result with the bane wolf. The blue stealers however totally destroy the AF tank, and 7 infantrymen are killed, including the sergeant! The nearby standard however ensure the 3 survivors fight on! The explosion proves harmful to the nids as well, as gaunts, stealers, and worst of all the last tyrant guard are taken out!

The gaunts manage to kill the master of the fleet and the sniper, but lose some gaunts as well, and the combat continues. the flyrant finally forces the IG squad 2 and RR2 to flee, and both are caught and eaten. It then consolidates right beside the hydra.

The veterans flee, and the flyrant is triumphant! The AF chimera is ripped apart, with the exploding fragments affecting everything around it! The CCS manages to hold versus the gaunts!

The dakkafax slaughters the RR and consolidates into the hill, while the black stealers fail to do anything to the PCS1 chimera!

IG turn 3

The veterans flee off board, and the last survivor of RR1 continues to fall back.

With the nids in their lines and the company commander in peril, IG squad 1 fixes bayonets and moves in order to assault the gaunts threatening to eat the CCS. Realizing the need to make a move towards the nids objective, the PCS1 chimera guns it's engines, tanks shocks through the black stealers, and moves 12" towards the nid objective, pops smoke, and the PCS dismounts right to the left of the blue stealers, intending to use the 3 flamers to full effect. The survivors of the AF squad moves to the right of the blue stealers, hoping to add the weight of it's 1 flamer to the fight. PCS2 dismounts and moves towards the flyrant.

The shooting phase turns into a barbecue, as ALL stealers are wiped out. 3 flamers from pcs 1 prove enough to toast all the blue GS, the chem cannon of the bane wolf finishes the last grey stealers, and the griffon regains their accuracy and wipes out the last 3 black stealers. The monstrous creatures prove tougher, as after the shooting phase is finished all that was done was to reduce the dakkarant to it's last wound.....

The assault phase sees IG squad 1 and the CCS wipe out the gaunts, with no casualties taken...IG squad 1 consolidates to protect the CCS from further assaults, as the CCS moves forward, the regimental standard flying high, visible to all....

The stealers are toast! The dakkarant is brought down to it's last wound!

IG squad 1 rescues the company commander!

Nid turn 4

The destroyed gaunt squad recycles back (without number) and rush forward, trying to rejoin the main fight. The flyrant moves on top of the castle right beside IG squad 3, while the dakkarant moves to assault IG squad 1. The dakkafex moves down the hills, to shoot at the PCS1 chimera...smoke protects the tank, but some strangler vines curl over the back to kill 2 flamer gunners! The PCS luckily holds as the regimental standard is in plain sight. The fex assaults, but just manages to scratch paint as the chimera is moving too fast to be hit.

The flyrant assaults IG squad 3, while the dakkarant foregoes shooting in order to be able to assault squad 1. The resulting combat kills guardsmen, but AGAIN the standard makes them hold!!!

The dakkafex fails to destroy the chimera, but some strangler vines affect members of PCS1!

The hive tyrants attempt to finish off the gunline troops, but the regimental standard inspires them to fight on!!!

IG turn 4

Movement is limited as most squads are in hth...PCS 2 mounts up in the veteran's chimera, right beside the objective on the IG side. PCS1 also mounts up in its chimera, who then continues moving towards the nid objective......the AF squad remnants move up, either to shoot at the dakafex or to reinforce squad 1's combat with the dakkarant.

Shooting is successfull as the hydra finally finishes the fex, and the heavy mortar all buts wipes out the incoming gaunts....the 2 survivors flee towards the nearer tyrant.....

Assault sees squads 1 and 3 being ground down by the tyrants, but not so many guardsmen fall, causing the standard to keep them in the fight!

The dakkafex goes down while the griffon mortar causes the gaunts to flee towards the dakkarant!

The guardsmen fight on!

nid turn 5

The fleeing gaunts continue to move towards towards the tyrant and manage to get within synapse range, and fleet towards the action.

Combat sees the flyrant finally defeating squad 3, who are caught and eaten. The dakkarant however, has a more difficult time due to it's fewer attacks, and the combat is a stalemate.

The flyrant finally finishes off squad 3...

Grind match! The gaunts move in to support the tyrant

IG turn 5

Crunch time! The chimera of PCS manages to avoid the rubble, and PCS dismounts right beside the nid objective! The AF squad gets ready to move in to support squad 1.

PCS manages to flame grill several gaunts, who then lurk rather than flee. The griffon miscalculates and the heavy mortar is short versus the same gaunts. In the assault phase, the tyrant kills the assaulting AF squad, but despite a -3 modifier AF1 holds again!

PCS1 makes a move on the objective!

If the game ended now, it would be a draw, as both objectives are contested. The die roll however shows that there will be a turn 6...

Nid turn 6

The flyrant emerges from the shadow of the castle, right beside the CCS! The gaunts also assault the CCS. The ensuing combat by both tyrants finally wipe out the valiant guardsmen! The aliens then cosolidate around the ruin where the objective is on!

Rarr!! Finally the nids triumph!

IG turn 6

Now or never! The griffon decides to forego shooting with the heavy mortar, and moves so that it's hull HB draws a bead on the nids. PCS1 and its chimera move in order to maximize shooting with their flamers, and PCS2 draws a bead on the flyrant with the plasma pistol and meltagun and flamers.

Shooting is a success! The plasma pistol and meltagun finally finishes off the flyrant (the monster fails it's 6+ invo saves), the wash from the flamer kills the last gaunt, and while the dakkarant shrugs off all the fire from chimeras and the hydra, it falls to a heavy bolter round from the griffon! The PCS1 and it's chimera fail to finish off the last gaunts, who continue to lurk...but the IG manages to eke out a win!!! 1-0! Whew!

The IG objective is claimed as the bugs finally fall!

The contested objective on the nid side..

It was a very exciting and tense match..I thought i would lose since my first 2 turns of shooting were atrocious and the rough riders failed to finish off at least 1 MC! But the flamers later proved their worth in clearing the smaller bugs, and attrition finally got the better of the bigger ones.

The man of the match was definitely the regimental standard bearer! Luck also played a part since the nids also did not manage to kill more than 3 men per turn, thus banner rerolls were usually on a -1 to -2. Besides that all the other elements of the army played their part, even the poor ratlings who caused to black stealers to be diverted to them. Both PCS also played their part very well, as they were the only infantry to finish the game. The guardsmen were also very valiant in holding the nid bigs while the rest mopped up the stealers in a flurry of flamer templates. the banewolf was a bit disappointing but Ian recognized what it could do and decided to take it out eary and managed to immobilize it, taking it out of the fight (although losing 1 stealer squad in the process!)...

For the nids, it was definitely the 2 tyrants, who survived dozens of shots, return blows, etc....and managed to eat more than 60 guardsmen...before succumbing (maybe they got too full?)....

A great game, so far my most exciting with the new codex so far!

Ah I'll have to contact Ian for more pics..

Yeah glass windows help protect dweebs with the "itchy hands syndrome"..but more so for the card games since booster packs are easy to filch, but the glass doors are open actually not locked during store hours..
