I've noticed on here people are very nervous about posting specific rules and point costs and it got me to thinking how in the world does Army Builder, a non-GW company, get around posting point costs in their program? Anyone know?

army builder is the tool you use to make army lists, thae actual army list files are all fanmade. AB themselves dont do any of that work. thats how i was told it worked.

But they still charge for a tool which allows the infringement of IP. I'm sure lawyers have battled it out, I would just love to know how it works.

By your reasoning GW should be able to sue Microsoft over Excel as well. It's as noted above. GW can't sue Lone Wolf over Army Builder because it contains none of their IP.

ahh, good point.
Why is it then people on these boards get bent out of shape when you post point values on army lists? It's kind of the same thing isn't it? except that perhaps in this form a person is presenting the material to the general public.

I can't point out any threads off the bat which people have scolded the OP for posting point values but I've seen it, probably in about 1 out of every 10 army lists I see posted.

Lol... if GW sued Microsoft for Excel and the makers of AB for the infringement issue, they would have to sue all makers of pencils and paper as well.

When it comes to these forums, it is indeed a good reason. Matter of fact, it is the only reason that matters. Posting on these forums is a privilege, not a right. If Yakface doesn't want us posting copyrighted material or pics of the test Dark Eldar models by Juan Diaz then that is his perogative and he doesn't need a reason why.

Yea, just like WMD was a good reason for invading Iraq right? It's blind obedience like that which gets nations into horribly draining wars and gives rise to some of the worst atrocities in the world.
Now, in terms of the answer to my question, "becuase I said so" is not a very good answer any way you look at it. It does not in any way explain why points aren't allowed (not like anyone really abides by that rule) on army lists.
However, thanks to wonderful, intelligent and meaningful posters like shellfishguy who can actually answer a question with an answer instead of a statement, my question has been answered. Therefore, This thread is done. Thank you for your time Ghaz, now you can go get a life.

Wow. You are getting completely worked up over nothing. If this friendly discussion on a forum gets you this upset as to compare forum rules with war, and those who follow said rules with atrocities, you should take your own advice and get a life. Seriously.

I'm sorry but Ghaz has been anything but friendly, he's been arogant and unhelpful.
As for comparing forum rules to war - you have completley missed the point. It's accepting "becuase I said so" as a valid answer which I take issue with, becuase that same blind passive following is the same mentality which sparked Iraq and, even worse, the holocaust.
To say one has nothing to do with the other is ignorance.

Were not talking about a country, this is a forum for us to discuss wargaming, and if the adminstrator says you cant post point costs because GW get there knickers in a twist and sue people over stupid gak, then you cant post point cost, look on most forums and there be the same rules.
