Ok so for my IG army - expect a P&M blog at some point - I have just completed my first ten-man squad with a sarge. I've not finished the special weapon trooper as I think it may be worthwhile taking Penal Legions.
Statline is nigh-on identical, albeit with better leadership!
Plus PLs get a perk each game, and all are pretty sweet, if a little unpredictable. What say Dakka on this front? I'm thinking of getting quite a few penal legionnaires...

Secondly, I'm using Meltavets (either Chimera or Vendetta carried) so am looking at getting up in the grill of the enemy. Should I arm them with shotguns. Hang on, do I even have the choice in the new 'dex?
I'm at work and it's at home, I just thought that.

Is it worth taking plasmavets?

Thanks guys,

Penals (hurr hurr, I said penal) have scout, too.

Better than an infantry squad, imho, but they chew FOC slots in a gunline army.

Meltavets are good, but i'd stick to lasguns personally, and throw in some demo vets with shottys (yes, you can). Problem is, they dont combine well with those penals.

And I run some plasmavets... DEAR GOD do they kill themselves a lot, and with one squad, they're either not much good as the bad guy has no armour, or targeted by everything the enemy has that cant hurt a leman.

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

Melta vets move every turn, therefore lasguns are a bit of a waste. You are mounting them in a transport, right? Shotguns if you have the models.

Plasma vets are ok, but executioners do the same thing with longer ranger. Remember that a melta is half as good as a plasma, but a plasma isn't nearly as good as a melta.

That makes no sense whatsoever.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I would have thought with the orders rules that shotguns would vanish from the tabletop.

keeping the vets in range of orders, especially mechvets can be very hard.

Remember that you are sacrificing a lot of range and you will need a full turn starting in the chimera and moving a full twelve inches before popping out and firing, whereas with lasguns you could have fired without moving.

Plasma vets require the grenadiers doctrine to give them a hope in hell of not melting their own faces off. Their also more expensive. They will however have some range to them which ma make up for your lack of range with shotguns.

Ok well I'm planning on running Grenadiers anyway, so that's cool.

My initial plan is running several squads of meltavets (grenadiers) in Vendettas. Giving enemy armour serious hurt for two turns.

Outflanking penal legions for no reason other than to confuse the enemy, and maybe tie up devestator squads from turn 2.

CCS will be Chimera mounted, and maybe some plasmavets back in Chims too, firing from firepoints.
My silly units like RRs or Mechanized Ogryns again will serve to distract the enemy whilst the vets and vendettas do the grafting.

Once I'm on the ground, toe-to-toe so to speak, I guess shotties are my best bet anyway, seeing as I need to be close up to bring the meltas to bear.

I agree. FRFSRF is very useful I've found, and I wouldn't want to give that up for Assault 2.
