If I got some high quality plastic army men, and added spare parts like Catachan heads...

Then painted them, and added extra stuff like static grass, and camo, etc.

Basically to "hide" the fact that the "base model" is a plastic army figure..

Could these be fielded as Catachans?

Sounds silly... but I'd literally save hundreds of dollars.

Of course you can do it, its your army after all!

The only problem you'll find, is if you try to enter into a GW run tournament or a Games Day, or even if you decide to play in a GW store.

The real issue here, is that your correct, you will save alot of money....this isn't quite what GW has in mind though! You might even find other WH40K enthusiasts get a stick up their nose because you've taken a short cut.

Personally, I think the GW Catachan miniatures ares $h1t and anything you do with plastic army soldiers will probably look 100 times better.

Do you mind posting a link to the army soldiers you're thinking of using?

Man down, Man down....

What scale 'army men'? All my plastic toy soldiers are 54mm or 1/32, which is much bigger than 40K scale. Mine are UK made, not US or Chinese.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I was thinking something like these...

http://www.valiantminiatures.com/figures_american.php

Then converting them

They seem to be the same size as catachan jungle fighters.

They're not. 1/72 is too small for what you want to do.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I think the correct scale you want to find is 1/28 heroic scale.

correct me if I'm wrong though

You're wrong. The nearest scale to the "heroic 30mm" size that GW use for Catachans is around 1:60. Although depending on what you are getting (tanks, buldings etc.) up to 1:48 scale may work.

Note "28mm, 20mm, 32mm" etc. is a "size" not a "scale"! Scale refers to the ratio in size between the model and the real item it represents.

Certainly the Valient models you linked to are too small for Catachans or even Cadians - they are only around 20mm tall - around 2/3 the height you need to match GW humans.

Go for it though! As HBMC says, the Catachans are complete arse, so pretty much anything you find of approximately the correct size will likely look better!
