I recently started assembling a Lizardmen battalion from the standard boxed set. I'm hoping to ramp it up to a 1500+ army eventually, but I'm still just starting out in WHFB, so I'm a complete newbie.

With that in mind, I'm wondering what a good sort of "starter" Hero/Lord would be? I realize I can't use a Lord until I get into a larger point count but, if I look to the future, I was trying to figure out what a good, flexible, starting point would be; something that would allow me to learn the game at the 500-1000 point level, and then still be of utility in the larger setting.

Thoughts?

Try Converting a Saurus Rider or Warrior into a Scar-Vet.

well id say,
take scar-vet on cold one to complement that unit of saurus cav(stupidty is annoying but not that big of a problem) you got. Also makes a good hammer unit now and later. If you're worried about a useless model you can always make him a bsb later if you dont have a problem with converting painted models.

a skink priest lvl 2, to learn how magic works and have basic magic defense and later you'll want some priest in a Lizardmen army as your pretty magic heavy anyway.

here is how i would field them,

Scar-Vet
Burning Blade -2 armour
The Maiming Shield +1 atk
Cold one
Light Armour

Skink preist lvl 2
Plaque of Tepok + 1 spell
Dispell Scroll

Hope this helps

I would take the Sword of Battle. 5 Attack Character is nasty.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

If he is in a group of saurus cav, take the mirror shield and a sword of battle.

i think its good for you to get a really good hold on your army at the 1000 point level. you really learn alot with those small games. the above scar vet builds are all good.

in a 1k game i would prolly run a vet set up like this:

scar vet
burning blade
ench shield
cold one

its a throwback to the old Nike saurus that i loved so very much.

Once you start playing with Lord level characters, you want to use a Slaan.

He really is the center piece of the Lizardmen army, and you should use him.

For Hero's, an Engine of the Gods supplements your Slaan very, very well.

For a Fighty Hero, the Skar Vet works great; but the Oldblood really is a poor choice in comparison to the Slaan.

No. That was last edition. 9 S5 Attacks? Ld Test or die? -1+ Saves? 1 wound becomeing 4 wounds? -1+ Saves + 1 wound becomeing 4 wounds? As opposed to a slightly better than average Lv4 Mage?

Go with the scar vet he is easy to get a 1+ armour save with no magic items if run like this

Shield
Light Armour
Cold One

So he starts off with a 5+ scaly skin the shield and armour add 1 each so that's 3+ and Cold One adds 2+ for a 1+ armour save.

A Scar vet. Forget Stegadon mounts or engines of the gods, a scar vet is a good, solid choice. Good Ld, good in a fight, and can have some nasty magic item combinations.
Just my two cents, but I thought as a lizzie player I should give my input.

Toowoomba, Australia

This is the character mix I took to a 1500pt tourney (40 players) where I gained 2nd place, behind a mean daemon army...

Saurus Scar Veteran (85) GENERAL, Light Armour (5), Sword Of Battle (20), The Maiming Shield (30)
= 140

Saurus Scar Veteran (85), BATTLE STANDARD BEARER (25), Light Armour (5), Shield (3) , Scimitar Of The Sun Resplendent (50), Cold One (20)
= 188

Skink Priest (65), Level 2 (35), Diadem Of Power (25), Dispel Scroll (25)
= 150

So a general on foot with 6 attacks at St5, T5 and armour save of 3+
BSB with 6 attacks at St 5, (1 attack at St 4) T5 and armour save 1+. Causes fear (worth its weight in gold when opposing units fail a charge because he is in a saurus unit and they have to fear check) Stupidity (usually once per game) This is my hammer guy, and is usually able to take out cav units by himself, and he can burst out of his accompanying saurus unit to get the charge on an enemy who thinks they are safe.
The mage for magic defence.

not liking the slann in this book as much as i did in the old book. i almost sold my lizzies recently, but i decided to slim them down for a fighty combat build instead.

slann is good for LD 9, and he is a decent caster, but you nee to protect him, i prefer to go for the throat with more fighty characters and units. thats just me. my current character loadout for my 2250 is:

oldlood, LA, Scimitar of sun, maiming shield, carno pendant, carnosaur

scar vet BSB burning blade, ench shield cold one

skink chief, staff of lost sun, terredon

skink priest, diadem and scroll

I'm still at the 1500 point range, so most of my Hero choices are based around what I'm gonna do when I finally bump up to 2000 and get those shiny Lord choices.

Skink Preist:
Lvl 2
Plaque of Tepok
Dispel Scroll

-Depending on which spells I get, hes either gonna provide some cover for my Saurus to get into combat or pop off any enemies with missile fire.

Scar Veteran:
Light Armor
Burning Blade of Chotec
Carnosaur Pendant
Cold One (optional)

-If you're not going to field any cavalry, then I'd plop him in a Saurus unit. Personally, I'd mount him on a Cold One add him to a unit of cavalry with the Sun Standard and send him down the flanks. There's very few models that can stand up to 4 (5 when frenzied) -4 Attacks with a 1+ Armor save.

I couldn't agree more, the last sentence is especially true.
