The other day I was told that since codex overrides rulebook, you must always use the minimum range with a whirlwind even when firing directly even though the rule book says if you fire directly you have no minimum range, but since the whirlwind only has a minimum and maximum range it overrides rule book. Which way does it work?

Artillery weapons always have a minimum range. If the whirlwind does not state "Cannot fire directly" like, for instance, the Imperial Guard Griffon Mortar, then it can fire directly if it wishes. In this case, the minimum range is ignored.

This is Daemonic Cheese:

3000 Pts
2500 Pts
1000 Pts (And growing)

I'd put a quote here, but XKCD would have a better one.

When I tried explaining that in the rulebook it says barrage can fire directly to ignore minimum range, he said codex overrules rulebook which mean the whirlwind ONLY has a min and max range and not below the minimum even if it fires directly.

Codex does not override rulebook. Specific rules (generally those found in codex tend to be more specific) override general rules in case of conflict.

In fact it does not matter, because the barrage type in the codex means you use the barrage rule from the rulebook. There is no conflict here. You need to be firm and say "No, the entry states the WW has the barrage attribute, and according to the BGB the barrage can be fired like so.....". Show him the part where it says to ignore the min range, there can be no rational argument after that.

This is exactly right, and if I remember right, there are also rules in the BRB that state that they override anything in the codex. I dont remember what they are offhand, but I know that I have seen them.
