Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

So me and a buddy of mine who plays Tau have a bit of a conundrum. Since all his tanks are skimmers and can just "fly" over difficunt terrain, could they fly over other units as well? We didn't have a codex/rulebook available and I figured I would get a quicker answer here.

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

Yes they can fly over enemy models, but you have to be able to place the model on the table (still on stand) at the end of its movement. It cannot end its movement with the hull less than 1" away from an enemy model.

Yes he can! Bad luck, matey! If you play IG, maybe consider investing in a few Hydra Flakkers... That'll stuff his skimmers right up!

I'd put a quote here, but XKCD would have a better one.

Hydras only work against skimmers moving flat out. The only unit this affects in the tau codex is a unit of Piranhas. All the others have wargear that makes them an obscure target, which Flak Tanks do not affect.

Check out my project, 41.0, which aims to completely rewrite 40k!

Anyone else feel that you end up playing the Tau's rulebook rather than the Tau themselves?

It's a joke thats based entirely on truth. The Tau have some special rule or piece of wargear that makes them an enourmous headache to kill that comes at little to no consiquence(sp?) to them.

They're an alien race, what do you expect? If you really want to see special rules, read an eldar codex. Even marines have skimmers.

Okay... and given that absolutely nothing in this thread references Tau special rules, why did you even bring it up in the first place?

Tau are a bit obnoxious, but they're nothing compared to the eldar, there is literally no reliable way to kill an eldar vehicle with orkz. And they can take like 8 in a 1500 point game

Lootas?

Also, the Tau honestly do have way more special rules than is sensible. Look at the trouble all their special rules get them into in this forum; they just went overboard with them. 20 different types of sensors really aren't needed.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

Well of course we need the:
-Difficult Terrain Sensors
-Heat Sensors
-Greater Good Potential Sensors
-Altitude Sensors
-Moisture Sensors
-Sensor Sensors
-Radar Detector
-CB Radio

All to maximize technological advantage for the Greater Good of course.

I dunno if it's funny because I'm intoxicated or because it's just funny... Either way, I lol'd.

But seriously, me and said friend play today at the shop, and he stumbled upon a rule he didn't know he had for his Hammerhead. Apparently he can equip it with something that if it's more than 12" away from anything (my Russ in this case), it's an obscured target and he gets a 4+ save. Really? I nearly tank shocked it just to get rid of that save...

They're called disruption pods, and they're practically an essential upgrade for all Tau vehicles. Multi-trackers are also popular.

It's a cover save. I'd rather be targeting a vehicle with a cover save than a fast vehicle with a holo-field (4+ cover save if they move above 12". 2d6 damage table; pick the lowest).

Oh if he (and you apparently) move flat-out, aren't all hits glancing? Again...fighting the rules more than the units themselves... Oh well...

What makes you think i'm a Tau player?

Most races have a few odd rules up their sleeves. It doesn't mean the players themselves have not employed tactics to win. Assault ramps would be quite useless to a race as h2h inept as Tau.

Your glancing hit rule is however from a previous edition. As far as i'm aware, there is no such rule in 5th edition.

He said that he has to move flat-out for the glancing rule, so I believed him...he can be a bit scatter-brained though... And yeah, all races have silly rules, it just seems like they went a bit overboard with the Tau.

Oh please, stop whining. Once you have a little bit of play experience under your belt you'll see that Tau are not at all over top in that regard. Or are next we going to hear you complaining about extra armor and smoke launchers on Imperial tanks means you're fighting their rules more than them?

CrashUSAR wrote:Oh if he (and you apparently) move flat-out, aren't all hits glancing? Again...fighting the rules more than the units themselves... Oh well...

Okay, I get it, that's just the voice of inexperience talking. Anyway, that rule was from 4th edition.

I believe in 5th edition, Skimmers that move 12" or more are only hit on a 6+. The whole "only glancing" deal is gone.

Yep, the glancing rule is gone. The cover save for moving flat out is it's spiritual replacement.

While disruption pods are a must have now, I wouldn't say tau vehicles are better off now; at least not anymore than every other vehicle.

Losing the glancing hits (and the reroll for immobilized results) sort of evens it out.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. It doesn't affect to hit rolls, the vehicle just gets a regular 4+ cover save. But any vehicle that moves >6" causes 6+ to hit rolls when assaulted.
