From an Email I recieved:

"Earlier this year, Rep. Jose Serrano, D-N.Y. introduced H. J. Res. 5, a bill that would repeal the Constitution’s 22nd Amendment which prohibits a president from being elected to more than two terms in office, thus potentially paving the way to make Barack Obama president for life. Not surprisingly, the corporate media currently caught up in Obama-mania has not covered this story. "

Confirmed here: http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-hj5/show

http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-hj5/show wrote:

CURRENT 111ST SESSION OF CONGRESS
OpenCongress Summary:
H.J.Res. 5 is a Constitutional amendment to remove the limit on the number of terms one may serve as President. It effectively would repeal the 22nd Amendment, which was approved by Congress in 1947 and ratified by the states in 1951. Over the past six congressional sessions, several members of Congress have introduced similar legislation, including Sen. Harry Reid in 1989 ( S.J.Res. 36). As is likely the case in the 111th Congress, the resolutions have never proceeded out of committee. Furthermore, given its past history, it is not likely that such resolutions have been or are currently tied to any specific presidential session.

Seeing as how it's been tried several times in the past without success, I doubt it'll pass. Still nice to know about, though.

Thats not how it works. That would require a constitutional amendment. Supermajority vote and (IIRC) same vote by the states themselves, not just the Washington lapdogs.

Won't happen though so I am not worried. Its not like we're Honduras and the President would try to violate the Constitution or anything, after all he's very supportive of what occurred there...oh wait...er...Cough cough

This would never happen. Sane democrats realize that this type of tampering with the constitution will just lead to a future Dick Cheney appointing himself to another term. A news item without significance but to raise the hackles on the right.

It has some significance. The bill was actually introduced...by a Democrat.

I love how everyone assumes that this would lead to a tacit 3rd term. Especially since there's only ever been one 3 term President in history, and this amendment has only existed since 1947.

Edit: This guy has tried to get this passed 6 times. Every year he's been in office; including while Bush was President.

Realistically, it'd take about 10 years for a Constitutional Amendment to be enacted.

If done legally thats a true statement, but I'd posit it'd never happen. Neither party is that stupid.

I'd say the tampering with the Constitution happened when term limits got set at all. Never there in the beginning, and FDR worked out great for us in the historical view.

I think that the American people should be able to elect someone as many times as they damned well please...let a better candidate than whoever keeps winning show up and unseat them, if they can. If they can't, then the people have spoken.

Notice, however, that the coward Congress won't pass term limits for the Legislative Branch - and they're the real source of all our problems, not the President. The Pres has the bully pulpit and can try to drive policy, but he can't pass laws, and even though he can veto, the Congress can always overrule him...but he can never overrule them back.

Power rests with the Legislature. Time to look into getting them out of those seats after a few terms, let some fresh blood that represents the current generation in. What kind of system of government is ruled mostly by the old?

The ability of incumbents to be re-elected is too much. I'd rather not have a soft dictatorship thank you.

I'll note here it was a Presidential tradition since Washington not to stand for election for more than two consecutive terms.

I don't really want to get into the specifics of the debate, but its far more complicated than "he worked out great", or "he sucked".

There have only been 12 (counting FDR) two term Presidents in US history. The power of the incumbent is largely mitigated by the sheer visibility of the Presidential campaign.

If you look at the the last century however, barring assassination or events like resignation, most Presidents have had 2 terms.

About to eat your Avatar...

I think what we need to do here, and this is just a theory mind you...

First we find the leading reps of each political party and add a bit of green party just to make things fun for everyone.

Once this mixture has been blended into a smooth texture we can add yeast and futuristic nanobots.

After the poli-dough has risen, let the mix be fried in a pan of bacon and eggs for extra extra flavor and spice.

In no longer than 3 days a new kind of politician will be born, we will call it THE RISEN ONE...

As soon as this beast has learned all of it's tasks, we can fit it with our entire nuclear arsenal and just chuck it via catapult into any country that beckons the beast of war and genuine politics.

Needless to say, this should solve our problem of overabundance of politicians as well as an effective way to save on military spending.

You welcome every new overlord. Remember the ant overlords.
But in all seriousness i doupt i will ever pass. But wait who came up with the idea for the bill. If it was obama then we should worried.
But i think this will have just as much luck as The bill to get rid of having to to be born american to be president or a bill to take away guns.
Beside even if the bill MADE it to either of congress then it would get major publicity.

In the last 109 years, there have been 8 2 term Presidents (counting McKinley). Exactly half of the total number of two term Presidents in the 220 year history of the Presidency.

For full disclosure, my first number (12) was wrong. I forgot to count Washington, Lincoln, Nixon, and McKinley (who bring the total to 16). The calculation changes if you also include those Presidents who have served partial terms: Johnson, T. Roosevelt, Coolidge, and Truman. Even then the numbers work out to 9 before 1900, and 11 after 1900. Not an unusual deviation. You could even put McKinley in the pre-1900 category since that's when he spent most of his time in office; making the numbers even.
