When I was younger I collected CSM not knowing how to play 40k. I've in the last half year become very involved and started a new army (sisters) but am interested in playing again with my Chaos since I have a substantial model count.

Long story short, my old paint scheme was Black Legion. I'm wondering if BL is regarded in any fashion similar to the way Smurfs are. I do like the fluffy idea of chaos undivided and making my army incorporate all four cults. I was thinking recently thought that it might be an over saturated legion choice, and I always aim to do things a little differently than the popular flow.

So what do you all think?

Well sorry to burst your bubble but BL is the most popular legion out there due to it's fluff and overall scheme.

From what I can tell, the popularity goes like this:

Black Legion
Nurgle
Khorne
Slaneesh (could be a few lower)
Iron Warriors
Night Lords
Thousand sons
Alpha Legion
Word Bearers

I think night lords are by far the least popular. In fact I don't think I've ever seen a night lords army aside from the one in the 3rd ed rulebook.

Thousand sons are essentially broken, as they are far too expensive and dont receive any benefits over the other legions.

I dont see any alpha legion or word bearer armies with the new rules. While Ive never seen another NL army either, my list was based off of a few message boards/personal experience combined. There are a few regular posters on here with Night Lord armies as well.

Yup, if I want to run a list that is half decent, I have to break the Night Lords fluff. Makes me sad.

Black Legion is the Chaos version of the Ultramarines.

And, with the current Codex, Word Bearers, Alpha Legion, Iron Warriors, Night Lords, Deaht Guard, Thousand Sons, World Eaters, Emperor's Children, Red Corsairs and every other Chaos army mentioned in the Chaos Codex are also the Chaos version of Ultramarines.

Remember folks, there are lots of different types of Space Marine (Ultra, Blood, Dark, Black, Wolf, etc.) but there's only one type of Chaos Space Marine (the Chaos kind).

They probly are but how else am I to get all the super Cult Troops in one army?

At least GW doesnt fawn over them and give them like 5 special characters like with smurfs. The BL cant just rely on being blue to win. Unlike SOME people
