I've finally decided to break down and build a marine army. I'm going with Salamanders. First things first, of course, is to build Vulcan. Since the official model sucks I decided to make my own. If mine turns out better then that's the one I'll use. If it's not that good when it's finished then I'll get the official model. I still need to make the shoulder pads and make some scales out of green stuff on his cloak and loin cloth. Let me know what you think so far.

I used a captain as a base for the model. They're the same size as normal marines. Terminators and some of the special characters are the only ones that are bigger than normal. I think that the angle of the shot makes him look smaller, too.

Very cool, but I think it might look better if you twist the gauntlet hand to be holding the spear better

Thats all, and I agree the GW is crap

Not a bad start, but I also think he may be holding his spear-ama-jig a little to high

Also, there's another thread on here with the official Vulkan model with 'reduced bling' which makes it look a lot better.

Good looking model! I'm not too sure about the power fist though, make it look like the fist is holding it, not cradling it.

I agree, I think twist the powerfist so its holding the spear more. That would help out alot. Other then that, good start man

I tried to twist the fist with another arm but with all of the hoses and crap I couldn't get it to look right. I finally got around to doing the scales on the shoulder pad, cloak and loincloth, though. I'll probably paint him up by the weekend.

Looks good to me, would have used the head of an Emperor's Champion (knight looking helmet) but I like how this is going.

Hmm, I'm not quite sold on it...

I think the armour just looks too much like a normal space marine's... remember he actually wears artificer armour.

Quite good otherwise though, I'm interested in what the finished product will look like.

Fantastic looking conversion, and very nice greenstuff work too (who knew???)!

Good greenstuff work for the cloak, I would have nicked a DE corsair cloak, but yours looks just as good. Keep the pics coming!

Nice work on the backpack. I had a hard time with mine and ended up just using a regular one. i might have to go back put a new one on after seeing yours.

I just used a couple of skink heads in place of the ball thingys.

If you finish with armour more Artitcer-ish the it'll be awesome.

Finally got around to painting him. It's not my best work but I learned a few things. I'll use him for now and once I get the parts that I want I'll try again later. I'll just use him for a member of the honor guard once I make another one.

Very well done... I think he has some more finesse that the official model lacks. He actually looks like he belongs on a front line, instead of a heroic statue.

Thats one of my reasons I hate the GW model.

This ones looking great though.
