This is an extract from the necron codex on destroyer tactics. Necron destroyers can cover the flanks of the flanks of the phalanx. Since they are able to move more swiftly than warriors, they can move from position to position whilst blazing away with their gauss cannons. The necron army's firepower increases massively when the army gets within range, so the destroyers must provide covering fire until then. A little of my own tactics get a squad of 4 or 5 destroyers to take out light tanks, annoying or heavy infantry shoot them like hell then when they have got like 2 guys left in the unit charge at them. WARNING! ONLY CHARGE IF THEY HAVE 3 OR LESS GUYS LEFT! Hope it helps.

It appears you are posting everything in this forum... try looking in the different sections before randomly posting in the introductions. for tactics try the 40k tactics section EDIT: the thread was moved as i said this  wow.

Why would you ever charge a unit with destroyers except in the most dire of circumstances. If your small number of non-power attacks that usually hit on a 4+ fail to finish off a wounded unit... well then a large chunk of your firepower is stuck fighting instead of shooting.

Yea seriously, if your destroyers are in CC 1 of 2 things is happening.
1. your REALLY not good at playing necrons/bad luck with a DS unit.
2. Its the end of the game and you got your head kicked in.
Those guys are fast enough to NOT get into CC, so keep them out of it and shoot shoot shoot

Better tactic idea: shoot the hell out of desired target. Move Destroyers away. Attack with large number of scarab swarms. Quietly chuckle to self. Repeat as necessary.

I assault with my destroyers regularly, as I also field monoliths and find that tying up a small cc unit for a turn can be invaluable, especially if I get to shoot them all again next turn. Do I do it all the time? Heck no. Only when it's vital.
As for destroyer tactics, a great one is to put all of your destroyer squads on one flank and pummel the crap out of the other army with them. Keep them 6" apart so they can WBB into each other's squads, and so blasts won't take them all out.
