3 Dragon Ogres w/2 hand weapons
2 Chaos Spawn w MoT
Scylla Arnfingrim
Giant w/MoS (Poppa Smurf)

Terrain: Hills on n/s, ignored, trees on east/west, NW means board north, west of trees, N means north of trees, center is between forest, etc.

Deployment: Daemons North, Trolls South

Deamons NW, Flesh Hounds, Keeper, Masque
Deamons N, All units of Pink Horrors, all Heralds, Daemonettes. HoS in Daemonette unit, both HoT in Pink Horror units
Daemons NE, Bloodcrushers, Flesh Hounds, Thirster

Trolls SW, Dragon Ogres, Galrauch, 2 spawn, 1 Troll unit
Trolls S, 3 troll units, Throgg (with 3 man troll unit), 2 warhound units, Scylla
Trolls SE, Kholek, Poppa Smurf, frenzy ogres

Daemons finish deploying first, lose roll.

Trolls 1:

Galrauch goes emo
No trolls stupid
All trolls surge north, Kholek hangs back

Kholek kills 1 Daemonette with lightning

Daemons 1:

Daemons move south, hesitating on E flank, surging on W flank, hesitating in middle.

Magic from HoT and PH kills 5 trolls, 2 from one 4 man unit, 3 from another.

Trolls 2:

W trolls stupid, Throgg's trolls stupid
Hounds charge Pink Horrors, lose and break
Trolls continue n. On E flank Poppa Smurf now right up in enemy's face.
Kholek blasts Daemonettes, kills 3
Galrauch flies up in front of Keeper/Hounds on W, Gate is dispelled, Breath of Chaos doesn't kill Keeper

Deamons 2:

KoS, Hounds charge Galrauch, who flees. Gets away due to Keeper hitting Masque (flee from rounds, puts Keeper into woods, hitting rear of Masque, > 3 inches in), Dragon Ogres also flee, to avoid discovered charge from hounds

In east, Hounds charge from of poppa smurf, crushers charge E flank. He kills 4 wounds of crushers with Swing with club, takes 2 wounds, hounds take 1 wound from CR

In center, Daemon magic unimpressive, Spawn + trolls are close now

Thirster crosses from E to center, crushes Scylla, overruns into Troll unit (2 left)

Trolls 3:

Galrauch rallies but emo (due to Masque leadership damage), Spawn aims at masque, just misses, trapped in front of Keeper/Masque. W trolls stupid

4 man Troll unit charges Pink Horrors with Herald, start doing damage

Kholek moves up to flank Thirster after it overruns

Ogres move into position to help Poppa Smurf

Poppa Smurf yells, kills another hound

Daemons 3:

In W, Hounds charge trolls, Keeper charges spawn, looking to overrun into combat, Kills spawn but ends up 1/8" out of combat masque dances at Galrauch's leadership

In center, pink horror magic fails to do much

Thirster charges Kholek, does 3 wounds, gets murdered

In east, Poppa Smurf takes 3 more wounds (5 total), sweeps club across hounds, killing 3rd and 4th.

In w, even without Keeper's help dogs murder trolls, overrun into Galrauch's flank

Trolls 4:

Galrauch is emo (due to masque), as 6 hounds flank him.

Trolls grind down Pink Horrors
Kholek + spawn charge daemonettes + herald, kill it
Ogres charge in to help Poppa Smurf, it yells, kills crushers (sending Ogres past), leaves it fighting 2 dogs with one wound left.
Galrauch is missed by all dogs, misses himself, and does 1 wound to the dogs, losing by one, makes his leadership

Daemons 4:

Keeper turns around, comes back
Galruach kills 3 dogs
Magic does 4 more wounds to Kholek, one left
Dogs kill Poppa Smurf, it tried to pick one up

Trolls 5:

Kholek moves e, shoots lightning at Keeper, dealing 3 wounds
Galrauch not emo this round, kills hounds off, gate dispelled

Ogres and spawn move into position to kill last unit of pink horrors

Daemons 5:

Magic kills Kholek
Masque dances at Galrauch
Keeper charges Throgg, who fails terror and gets run down
Dogs follow Ogres

Trolls 6:

Galrauch emo, hurts himself for first wound
Ogres + Spawn kill last Pink Horror unit

Daemons 6:

Keeper + Hounds kill Ogres

Final score:

Both sides have killed general, Daemons have 2 quarters, Flamers and Keeper, Trolls have 1 quarter (Galrauch)

Daemon survivors: Keeper (under half), 5 Flamers, 2 Flesh Hounds, Masque
Troll survivors: Galrauch, Spawn w/MoT

Result: Tie.

A hard fought game, could have gone either way. Good practice for 'Ardboyz

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Was always interested in fielding Trogg and his Troll Horde.

Nice Rep! And congrats against beating daemons!

Well, it was a tie, but I've beaten Daemons with the trolls other times, so I'll take the compliment and apply it to some other battle.

The Trolls are fun, but you have to develop a tolerance for their Stupidity. I've had it ruin a number of battles, would be easy to get discouraged by it.

Wow, the Masque really ruined Gaulrach's day... I was surprised there wasn't any Ld Banner to complete the Ld Bomb. What's the story on that?

(I know it's not your army, but just curious).

Hm, looks like the Monstrous Horde is a fairly good build for WoC and can stand up to Daemons well enough to get a tie.

But you're still playing Daemons, and that disgusts me.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

You're disgusted that he's playing *against* demons?

@Red_Zeke:

Most fierce armies nowadays have all their important units ITP. No need for other half of leadership bomb when most games where you might have trouble it doesn't work.

The masque, by contrast, is similarly cheap and not fighty, but also useful vs. ITP armies. Lowering movement is gold. Further, the Masque doesn't give up any bonus points when/if it gets killed.

@Cheese:

You are right to be disgusted, I don't believe in cheesiness. Bring anything legal and its fine by me. I didn't play Daemons this time, but I've done so on other occasions, its a great codex.

How were the trolls killed so easily? (Was it the flamers and the tzeentch magic?

I know there is a Throgg army at the 2500pt tourney I'm going to next week with 20+ trolls.
With the '2 wounds regenerated per unit per game phase = roll on eye of the gods table' rule I'm going to be struggling with O&G (no flaming attacks)

Best I can come up with is smash everything into Throggs unit and try and kill him, and flank units and break them rather than kill them...

@ 40K - I always enjoy your Throgg reports, such a damn cool army with all those monstrous SC running around. Good luck at 'Ard Boyz, hope to hear about the rampaging.

@ Nads - That's the main reason I still shy away from chaos trolls - I'm just not convinced they can actually do much once they hit combat. 3 attaks each is sad times with my dice, and Ld4 means they aren't going to last long against the most basic of CR5 blocks. Taking 4 trolls likely helps this problem, but that's still 12 attaks -> 6 hits -> 2-4 wounds (depending on armor) = not CR6 ...

@hardrock: Thanks!

@WG: One unit got burned down, another got run over by the thirster, another got beat by bad dice on a flesh hound charge, and the last...I don't recall, probably shot down, I think it was Throgg's unit.

@BS: Thanks! It's a lot of fun to play. I think I may just go Daemons at the 'Ardboyz tourney though. All the cool kids are doing it!

On the subject of the trolls, I find they do better the more the modern metagame propogates. Nowadays folks bring mostly cav units, and regen + vomit is brutal to charging cav. I've seen em bounce charging chaos knights with a decent degree of regularity. I use the other parts of the list (scylla, the general, Throgg's unit) for enemy infantry, or I try and get a flank charge alongside my front charge.

Critical is that the Trolls can flee. It's a bigger deal than it looks like at first. Most modern armies are ITP. Trolls give you an edge in maneuverability, if they aren't Siren Songing you all over the place.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).
