Guard Heavy Weapon Crewman

Hi, I'm new to 40k. I started an Imperial Guard army a few months ago, painted a few squads, a hq and a sentinal and some ratlings. I enjoy the painting but i have never even played a game yet. I'm hopeing to get a few ideas of what to get next and see some good examples of army lists of 1000 and 1250 point games.

Way to go!
(My first matches were none too glorious to say the least)
It's a shame you only got to the end of turn 3 after 4-5 hours. It never does well to leave a close game hanging.
My game yesterday was HAIRLINE close. In the end it came down to my Assualt Serge with a power fist Vs a Sternguard serge with power fist. They knocked each others lights out. My opponent technically won cuase he had a mobile (yet weaponless) vindicator on the field. Damn close though. Funnest game EVA! So how did yours go? (details, mate, details)

Thanks, It ended up taking so long because I had to look over so many rules and my friend had played only a few games before this so he was almost as unsure of some of the rules as I was.

Any last-stand characters that siezed the spotlight? Moments of anguish or triumph? The tears of your losses and the laughter of the thirsting gods?!?
(Sanely) Any particular moments that stood out?
For example I had a single IG sergeant who (over a number of turns) single handedly took down an 8-man pathfinder sqaud with nothin but a chainsword and laspistol.

I took out an Ork trukk in the first round with my lone ml scout sentinal, and I had 5 ratlings which did really well at constantly picking off ork boys, 2 or 3 at a time but it frustrated him, on the other hand i learned that having all my squads with a gl was usless, they didnt kill anyone, and i had four in all.
