Today I had an interesting experience when I found out one of my new work colleagues is a practicing scientologist. Unfortunately I found this out the hard way when I made a joke about it (due to a story I the paper about Tom Cruise) in the canteen and he took offence. Luckily it’s all cleared up now between the 2 of us but I’m slightly taken aback about how to deal with. I’ve never met one before in all honestly I didn’t think there where any members outside of Hollywood. I always took it to be an eccentric film industry version of freemasonry.

I think the best approach is simply never to broach the subject again whilst he is around. Especially as we have to maintain a professional relationship but I was wondering if any had any experience with dealing with scientologists on a day to day basis? Any topics worth avoiding during conversation?

This works. Also avoid these topics
-Hollywood nutjobs
-Aliens and alien spirits
-spiritual audits
-psychology/psychiatry
-cults

Put simply...you kind of have to treat them like you would a member of any other religion, which is to say you cannot mock them to their faces. Religion isn't about making sense, it's basically all the same sort of superstition, but if someone really believes it then it is real to them, and that's that.

I'm a Scientologist. I really don't appreciate how people treat us based on one member of the group. I don't judge other religions based on one vocal radical. Also could a mod remove that xenu.net link, it's a prejudiced website that spreads disinformation and hate.

Naw, scientologists are messed up.

About to eat your Avatar...

Yeah...

Are scientologists even considered a religion? I have literally no respect for their beliefs, mainly because the core of it is that anyone not them is deserving of punishment. I suppose you could say that about a lot of religions, but scientology actively engages in beratement and severe censorship that no other religion can match.

To put it lightly I wish the whole thing could just be banned, it is just a brain-washing cult with nothing positive to teach anyone. Screaming at people that deny your beliefs and investigate the truths of your organization, then trying to totally destroy their reputation is criminal to say the least.

Grumble....grumble....grumble....

Modquisition on:
Gentlemen, and I use that term loosely , lets cease and desist on the merits of scientology itself as I am not sure if that violates Rule #1 or not. The topic itself may have merit so lets focus on that.

As an aside:
Dakka's OT regulars discussing the merits of the latest thread:

There are two types of people who get involved with these idiots. The rich idiots who have too much money and no sense and the everyday plebs who are not capable of thinking for themselves.

Just take him out back and keep thumping him until the brainwashing falls out of his ears

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.
