I know it seems simple, but after reading a few entrees on different forums I've realized that people have very different ideas about where they should place objectives.
What do you take into account when placing objectives? Do you have a set strategy or things that you consider the basic rules of placing objectives?

Its very hard to generalise because its dependent on so many factors - terrain, your own list and play style, your opponents list and playstyle, etc.
If you have scoring units that are static, place objectives as far back as you can, preferably in cover with good fields of fire. Units such as eldar rangers/pathfinders, IG line infantry with heavy weapons, etc can be deployed onto these and spend the rest of the day sitting there shooting.
If you have mobile scoring units OTOH, place objectives towards your opponent (for aggressive scorers such as BA assault squads, Berserkers/Noise Marines etc) or in hard to reach places so you can jump on them mid-late game (this works well with devilfish-mounted FW, ork boyz in trucks etc).
The trick is thinking where your units are going to end the game, not where they start. Work out their likely end points whilst being tactically effective and place objectives there.
Taking them end game will then take a lot less effort.
Hope this helps,

Chimera_Calvin is damn right.
If you plan to rush a Tau army with everything youve got, just put everything on his side. Crush him in CC while gaining objectives at the same time.
Only put objectives on your own side, when you want to stay there.

So are there any other ideas? Any unorthodox strategies that you've found to be effective?
Has anyone tried placing objectives in such a way that they lure opponents into firing lanes? It seems like a godo idea in theory, but there's a nagging voice in the back of my head telling me to stop pretending I know strategy

When playing the guard I often like to put objectives in my opponents objective zone. Also out in the open. Reasons are simple. Keeps them from throwing everything at you, generally a good thing to do vs guard. Turns it to a shooting match. Guard generally win this type. With some fast moving elements it is often easier to win this way then defending your own objectives. Anytime you can make your opponent do what you want them to do with out ever firing a shot, makes the game much easier for you. If they are not trying a massive assault vs guard then half the war is won already. In a 5 objective mission I like to have 2 close by, with a third that can be gotten to easily in 2 turns. Then the objectives act as a wall for your shooty army. Not many opponents will abandon a objective it they own it.
