Ok I have Vulkan and 30 marines. 20 of them are coming down in drop pods. Would rhinos be better? I do not have experience with drop pods. I have 2 squads out fitted with combi-meltas and meltaguns and the other with a flamer. I don't know if taking a heavy weapon is worth it...I mean they will rarely be able to fire it. What do you think is the best solution???

The best solution, in my opinion, can be found in the tactics forum.

Moving to tactics.

Free heavy weapons are free take them. Drop pods are great if you want to be in where you want to be first turn. Take them in odd numbers only. This is because half rounding up will arrive first turn and the rest when ever. Best way to take another drop pod is to give it to a Dreadnought with a melta (he wants to come in later)

And get some experance with the drop pods its the best way to learn where to (or not to ^_^) place / use them. Things to note about drop pods AV12 (even when open topped) take work to kill. A drop pod can easily contest a point. Also they can not fire on the turn they deep strike.

Because its free. You can take a multi-melta or missle launcher for free. your giving up a bolter for the possibility of a much harder hitting heavy weapon. Plus MM are scarey.

you take the free heavy weapon for that one case where it does fire and save's the day. It's a "just in case" type thing. Besides with the ability to combat squad with the drop pod you can put the combi melta and meltagun in one squad and a multi melta in another so oen can advance while the other stands and shoots. And since you have vulkan the MM is twin linked. And did anyone mention free? No reason not to take it.

You can utilize the heavy weapon in a drop tac squad by dropping yourself onto an objective and using the squad to hold/contest it for the length of the game.

You can't fire it the turn you drop but as long as you stay put you can fire it at will for the rest of the game. You can also use your pod as cover. Put a deathwind launcher on a few of your pods and give the ememy reason to waste some of their precious heavy weapons fire on your immobile transports. After they are destoryed they still offer you cover.

So if a drop pod comes down it can offer you cover??? I mean besides the blocking of certain LOS how would it confer a save??? That is what you are saying right that you can get a save from the pod. :0

yes, it can give you a cover save. And definitely consider those Multi-meltas as they are twin linked when you have Vulcan, making them twice as accurate

I'm confused though how does it confer a cover save...I was completely unaware of this haha.

If it partially blocks line of sight, it grants a cover save. That's how I understand it at least, I could be wrong as I don't have the rulebook in front of me

QFT this has happened in a game for me many a time (phase out for Necrons and holding objectives)
