Okay I'm looking at using Lysander as an HQ, however Looking at his special rules, I wanted to know how best to use him. Lysander has bolter drill and so I thought it would be best to use him with regular terminators, however putting regular termies in land raiders wastes there firepower. Also Lysander is most effective hunting monstrous creatures and generally smashing things to bits with his hammer which screams assault terminators. So what is the best way to use him?

Also a side question with lysander does bolter defenses only work on ruins, or can it increase say a fortified building to a 2+ cover save?

I'd try putting him with a bunch of Sternguard in a drop pod. He'd boost their shooting and provide a nice CC punch.

Doesn't Bolster Defenses spefically say that is increases the cover save of a single ruin by one?

Bolster defence can only be used on ruins (4+ cover save) that are in your deployment zone. sometimes I play on tables that have no ruins at all, let alone in my deployment zone.

However, a unit with stealth, like scouts with camo cloaks would jhave a 2+ save in bolstered ruins.

This sounds like fun (and is something I want to try), but I'd DP him in with SGVs. Not only does he help the SGVs shoot better (rerolling the AP3 shot is super nice), but he also makes charging them much more daunting.

Master of the forge seems to do everything that Lysander does but cheaper, plus he can get a conversion beamer.

There is something to be said about having a 4 wound 2+/3++ HQ that is immune to instant death with a str 10 Ap1 thunderhammer. Bottom line is that for 200 points you can get 5 TH/SS terminators or Vulkan or Pedro, which are all better uses for the points.

there are 3 squads that i take lysander with depending on who im playing and what im playing. he works well in the LRC with assult termies of course but if i take a second unit of normal terminators i will usually deepstrike them and lysander tags along with these guys, he increases their shooting potential andincreases their survivability by being able to place those high strength low ap shots on him.

the third option would be drop podding him with a unit of sternguard.

I either put him with a sternguard squad with a pair of heavy bolters, or keep him at the back with a normal tactical squad and sit on an objective. He makes a standard tactical squad horrific if it has 9 bolters and a heavy bolter, so I don't need to say what he does with a sternguard squad.
I wouldn't use him as a pure assault model, I've tried it and he and his unit ends up as too much of a bullet magnet.

In a world gone mad, who is left to fight for truth, justice and all that gets you smashed for under a fiver....

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

One thing he gives any squad is the ability to take hits on his 3++ with 4 Wounds and Eternal Warrior.

I use Captain Lysander alot in my Imperial Fist army. Like many others have said, he works well in most situations. Recently, he helped my army to a couple of wins in the 'Ard Boyz prelims. Game one, he rode in a LR with 5 assault termies. Game two, he walked on with 10 shooty termies. Game three, he walked with the 10 shooty termies and almost killed an uber nob biker unit, before he finally fell.

In all three games, he was the focus of the enemy attention. Were I to have factored that in a little more, I could have put him in a place where he could move the enemy toward him instead of toward my softer tactical units.

I feel that he is an awesome character who lends flavor to any Imperial Fists army (stubborn units that can out shoot and out assault). I know that the trendy thing is to run the Vulkan list, but I believe that stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something challenging is a good general's reward. The Imperial Fists may not win every battle, but they won't go down without a good fight.

I think he is a great character, I feel like double posting here because he adds something unique to the army-list. I think his only real downside is his point cost and he is maybe better in 2250 point games than 1850. 200 points is a lot of points for a 4W S10 Thunder Hammer that cannot even Sweeping Advance but he still comes with +1 cover and Bolter Drill, which is a great bonus.

I am building an army with a Thunderfire Cannon and two dev squads in 1850; each dev squad will get a reinforced cover save and then Lysander will lead the rest of the army up the field. The devs have ML, Lysander is (probably) in a squad of Termies with Chain Fists so they can take out Land Raiders if they have to. I may put him in a tac squad though, since he is expensive and termies cannot hold objectives. I will have to play it a few times, and look forward to doing so.

I take Lysander in a 10 man Sternguard squad in a drop pod. I drop them somewhere where they'll do a lot of damage, kill whatever I can, and then let Lysander become a 1-man tarpit. The man can't die.

I usually bolster a ruin and put my Thunderfire cannon in it. Makes it pretty survivable.

Termies can't BUY pods. However, they can still go in them. It takes up two slots, but luckily DPs have a 12 man capacity.
