Just a non-serious post in a very serious forum. I personally find Patton Oswalt or John Pinette to be a tie for the being the funniest comedians I have ever heard.

When i was younger I was a big Jasper Carrot fan. But have to say that nowadays, I have become a complete fan of Lee Evans, I find his style of comedy utterly hilarious and have even bought all his DVD's
@Goliath.
Bill Bailey is a definate second contender for me, music mixed with comedy is a great mix when done properly and a lot of new acts are using music in their gigs.
Also, Every guy needs to find the "Man Drawer" scene that Macintyre did, its completely true.

I worked as a mover off and on for a few years and I can confirm how much truth there is to this. Just imagine how much stuff this little apartment has! You'll never knew what hit you .
When I was very young (early '70s) I actually got to hang out with Bill Cosby one on one a few times. Because of this I have a soft spot for Bill Cosby. Although I never got into the show too much I really love his old stand-up.
Carlin as well.
For me, too many comedians seem derivative (of course they all are to some extent) and I can't get into them. But a couple that stand out to me...
Mike Birbiglia
Demetri Martin

Bill Bailey, Frankie Boyle, Ross Noble, Dara O Brien, Sean Lock, Rhod Gilbert, George Carlin, Russell Brand (yes his stand up is suprisingly good), Ed Byrne, Stephen K Amos are all good.

Dude, this Demetri Martin guy is really good, I like his style a lot. I would assume that his honesty is shining through in this show right here. I have seen his stuff a bit before, but he has an awful lot of great stuff to say.
All of the Monty Python group. Graham Chapman's my favourite. I love all the absurd characters he plays in The Flying Circus. It's a shame he died of cancer. He was a huge activist for gay rights, and is still sorely missed.
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.
Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.
I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

On a side note, here's one of my favourite Graham Chapman moments.
Ah, he was too young to die.

Very nice, George Carlin was truly a great...he will be missed for all time.

I realise that this is rather an unpopular view but am I the only person who thought Bill Hicks was very hit and miss?
Yeah he made some great points but allot of his routines where just him ranting and ranting (and allot of his rants where ill-informed and directionless) it just got old very fast.

I would probably tend to agree with you on that. Having said that, I really like Bill Hicks. Personally, I think that Bill Hicks isn't the most laugh-out-loud funny comedian out there, but the thought that he encourages and inspires makes up for some of his less funny material. I think I tend to enjoy Bill Hicks on sort of a different level than most other comedians. He performed from the heart, and that's the more important thing to me. I watched a lot of his stuff earlier this year, and really enjoyed it. I guess that I mean is, while I enjoy Bill Hicks' stuff a lot, I find that I don't laugh as much at his stuff as I do some other comedians.
I've been watching a lot of Jim Gaffigan lately. That dude is hilarious.

Big name but not too proud to play small theatres.
Always gives good value, his shows stop at least one hour later than they should -often to the chagrin of staff.
Still going after 51 years in showbiz, he is well into his eighties.
He doesnt go to celebs, those in the know come to him. The Beatles came to him in the 60's and people are still going to him. He is a man to listen to and learn from.
He takes Comedy to an artform and as near to a science as he can get it. He studied laughter and the psychology of comedy, he is a philosopher as much as a comic.
Above all else he never tells an off-key joke. Anyone can tell a joke that gets a cruel laugh, it takes no skill, all you need is the jabs and a laugh sound effect at each punchline. If Jonathan Ross and other no-talents can do such 'jokes' and sound hilarious anyone can.
Doddy works on a different level, some of his jokes are fairly lame, but you laugh anyway because of how he tells them. Its more technique and less denegration, not many could get away with his repetoire.
He still has a good voice and does a variety act, again remembering his age. Some of his jokes are 'traditional' he doesnt have one or two iconic lines that are iconically definably his, he has remes of such material. More than any recorded artist. Still while some come for the traditional act, there is also a lot new and topical in each show.
Ken Dodd is the last of the old vaudeville acts, and is still going. When he is gone that era will end. There are plenty of funny people either from their own skill or from telling easy target jokes, but the is only one Ken Dodd.

Monty Python, Lee Evans for his sheer hyperactivity on stage, Denis Leary always liked his acerbic wit and the way he didn't give a *@&^ about political correctness

Jeff Dunham is freaking hilarious. I actually had a chance to meet him when he came back to my university for our homecoming, as he is an alumnus.
