Hey there,
I am just getting into WH40K after a brief stint with WHFB and also playing Necromunda. I blame a couple of my coworkers. Dakka seems to be an excellent source of information but try as I may my supreme skills of forum search function and googling are not giving me the hopefully more or less concise answers I am looking for.
I love Orks fluff
I thought the new shift for 5th edition rules made mechanized units like IG pretty cool
I went through a lot of shifting in what I wanted to play with because both my coworkers are working on SM armies so I know I don't want to play SM
I am pretty sure I have come full circle to wanting to play Orks partly for fluff reasons and I just think they look awesome, but...
I don't really want to paint a couple hundred figures (I know then dont play orkz) so I don't want to go a pure Horde list I would prefer one of the more mechanized lists but all the lists I find are 1750-2000 point lists and for starting out I am going to need some ramp up from 500 to 750 to maybe 1000 and that will be it for me for a while I am guessing.
Searching the Army Lists returns years old posts from all over the place and I am finding it a little frustrating, also the Ork Taktika article seems like it might be somewhat outdated given the unit makeups of what is being posted now as competitive armies.
Just like an Ork I need to get in some fights and grow from there is there an option for starting out that is decent besides a Warboss and throwing 50 boyz on the table? Thanks

First thing when it comes to not looking stupid is probably not mispelling the thread title :(

At such low points, some armies have issue with anti-tank. If you take a Big Mek as an HQ you can take a Def Dred as one of your troop choices. The other could be a truck with 'Ard Boys.
Give the Mek a Kustom Force Field and put him in the truck with the Ard Boys and keep the Dred near the truck and you have 500 points of hard to kill armor for only 15 models. The only problem is; When your SM friends start fielding Melta-guns you might lose the Dred before he gets his points back.

Welcome to The Green Side!
Yeah, Green Tide can be a little tiresome to paint! :(
I'd still recommend the Black Reach boxed set as a CHEAP way of getting a Boss, some Nobs and some Boyz, along with a few koptas.
Our group started recently, and worked up from 500pts, and are now regularly playing 1500.
I found it was worth writing a 1500 pt list to work towards, so you have some idea of what models to pick up along the way
Yes, the list will change many times.
At 500 pts, some nice units are:
Bikers. Killa kans. Koptas or Buggies. Maybe a Dredd.
Low pts is very much a paper/scissors/stone game - if you turn up with loads of kans, and your foe has nothing that can pierce them, you win. If you turn up with 50 boyz, and they have pie-plates and scatter-lasers, you lose.
I'd suggest going with your gut!
Read the fluff, browse the models, choose some units you like and hit the table running!

I think I am going to pickup a Black Reach set splitting it with one of my co-workers who is running SM. Then its a question of if I should go for individual models or pickup the Battleforce. The Ork Tactica pretty much says normal Warbikers are not very good, of course it also says Stormboyz are great and I have not seen them in any current Ork lists really. I like the idea of some guys in a truk or trukz, maybe some footslogging boyz for holding objectives etc? And a couple deffkopta's sounds fun too.
If I get a mek with KFF am I better off with the 1 Dredd or some Kans? Kans seem more popular.
PS. Is there another forum or thread/area where I should be asking these questions?

Aye, now we've said hello, probably time to open up a new thread in "Army Lists" or "Tactics" section.
But to answer your last post:
The Battleforce is good, IF they are the models you want.
personally, I don't use my trukk or Bikers at the moment (At least the trukk is useful as a Looted wagon - I built a big BoomGun for the back of it )
Are you planning on much conversions/scratch-builds, etc? if you are, then you can pick up ANYTHING! The Lootas box has lots of bitz n bobz in it
At low pts, either a Big Mek to make your Dredd a troop choice, or a few kans, after you've bought the mandatory trops. I find dredds a bit inflexible at low pts ... if it's in the wrong place, it can take AGES to get anywhere. kans are no faster, but tend to have longer range weapons.
A couple of trukks of slugga boyz, and a mob of shooty is good, and as pts go up, you can either get more trukkers, or upgrade their rides to battlewagons.
My 3-wagon list has 1 nob-wagon, 1 'ard boyz wagon and 1 slugga-wagon. A KFF shielding it all, and some other units depending on pts, foe, mood etc.

Yeah thats the thing I am not sure I need that many boyz right now. I don't think I will do too much converting or scratch building until I have my feet properly wet in regards to the basics. fortunately from doing some other stuff I do have a lot of tools like dremel etc.
I think the bad thing about the Army Lists forum is so many threads pop up a day it would be hard to keep things current enough for people to read it.
I like the idea of being trukk/wagon based more than deff dreads and kans at this point. Just without going to a gagillion footsloggin boyz
I'd probably use the Trukk and the Nobz from the Battleforce and I think bikes are cool even if i don't play with them. Can you ever have too many boyz for orkz? lol?

Cool, wish i had a Dremel. I keep spending the money on luxuries like food and petrol! Silly me! :(
Why not write up a list, and post in in "Army Lists"?
If you list what models you have/want to buy, we can work with that.

I have a Kawasaki Dremel rip off that I got from Costco so it was cheap. I used to build scale 4x4 rock crawlers and used it for that.
I guess I can post in Army list I just think it will get buried

So I started painting and I am even worse than I was when I was painting my fantasy Ogres.
I have a question about the foundation paints it seems to me that the Mechrite Red was going on very thing I could see right through it to the white primer is this just until it dries or does it take multiple coats I thought the whole point on the foundation line was it coats quickly
Are you supposed to mix it with a little water like normal paint?
