I know, I know, strange place to make a first post but this question has been bugging me:
Okay. In the rule book the section on morale tests stipulates that they are taken if a unit suffers more than 25% casualties in a single phase and are taken at the end of the phase.
This is all well and good, however in the BT codex when they give the rules for Righteous Zeal they say:
"In the Shooting Phase, any Infantry unit (not Jump Infantry) that is not Pinned or Falling Back must take a Morale check if it suffers any casualties from enemy shooting, not just when it suffers 25% casualties. All other units in the Black Templars army check Morale and fall back as normal."
Now I understand, having searched the internets, that the consensus opinion on this is that morale checks for righteous zeal are taken at the end of the shooting phase, and thus a unit may only zeal once per enemy shooting phase. This is how I play it now and how I will continue to play it. This is just to disclaim the notion that I bring this up in hopes of finding an advantage (besides I play a mech list).
My question is: Does not the RAW in this case state that a morale check must be taken immediately if a unit suffers any casualties in the shooting phase? The Rule Book specifies "at the end of the phase" in the section on morale checks however the BT codex does *not*. Not only does the BT codex not say "at the end of the phase" as the rule book does, but it also makes black letter that it RZ supersedes the normal Morale check rules.
Basically, since the RZ rule does not specify that the morale check must be taken at the end of the phase is it not then demanding that the morale check be taken immediately upon suffering a casualty from enemy shooting? To do otherwise is to *assume* they mean at the end of the phase like a normal morale check and isn't that were we cross from RAW to RAI?
