I prefer painting chaos black onto all models as a basecoat, including my guard. It might take longer than spraying, but it allows me to cover the entire model, and find any problems that may arise later in the painting process.

If the general colour scheme is bright, go white. If it's dark, go black, any in between go gray

halfords also do 2 other colour - a rusty red & a dark yellow as primers. Both are good (I'm using the red for the primer & base coat for my blood pact & the yellow for basic desert type troopers).

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Primer helps the later layers of paint to stick to the model better, so you don't have issues with paint brushing off or whatever. I spray all models black and quickly touch up any missed spots with black paint.

hmm. well im going with the plain Green and Khaki color scheme and the GW guide says do a black undercoat so ill probably go with that, although i've known those guides to be wrong.

Gathering the Informations.

Also, a bit of a tip if you want to do this as lazy and quickly as possible:

Do NOT use the GW Desert Yellow, Kommando Khaki, etc multilayering technique for the Khaki.

Use Khemri Brown from the Foundation Paints.
One layer and it looks as good, if not better, than the version that GW does. Wash it with Devlan Mud and Gryphonne Sepia, and bam. Professional looking Khaki, nice and simple.
