I ran into this situation at Ard Boyz, my opponent was probably correct, but I didn't like the explanation at the time.

I shot up a unit of terminators, he went to ground, and 6 still ended up dying. After the shooting phase ended, he made the terminators fail their morale and they ran back. There were outside of my charge range, so they regrouped... ..... They are still pinned aren't they? He said they regroup and may act as normal? In our situation it really didn't change the game, but it still feels suspect.

BRB, pg 46 says 'Once a unit has regrouped, it cannot move during the movement phase, but otherwise it behaves as normal'. So going by RAW they are not pinned any more.

OT: Why the hell would you go to ground unless in 4+ cover? out in the open their inv is better....

If you run back you are no longer pinned, marines or not. He used ATSKNF to then auto regroup, which means they act completely normally - move, shoot and assault

ATSKNF, doesn't talk about pinning at all, just regrouping. Regrouping on pg 46 does not talk about pinning at all, just falling back and regrouping from it. Pinning on 31, does mention its a leadership test, but the rules for going to ground on pg 24, state that its a voluntary pinning, meaning you chose to fail your test.

I really need the long drawn out explaination, cause it doesn't seem to make any sense. I appoligize for that.

Does failing a morale check suddenly give you the ability to ignore the fact that you "went to ground" in the first place? I don't read that anywhere.

I'm good at remembering rules, not figuring out this kind of stuff.

Yeah, he had cover, so a 3+ save vs. 3 plasma cannons when you are bunched up.... ok you get the picture!

BRB pg 24, whilst it has gont to ground, the unit may do nothing of its own voiliation...it will take morale checks as normal). If the unit has to fall-back, it will return to normal immediatly'.

Heh, the most important thing is to make sure that you use a "Pin Vice", not Marneus Calgar, to pin your models. Works much better.
