Hello everyone! I have been lurking for sometime now and I decided it would be fun to post a blog for my Ultramarines studio force i am doing for my commission painting business. I decided to challenge myself to see how far I can get how fast and so far I am 60% through with a little less than 20 hours under my belt. So when I can I will post little challenges for myself to show how fast I can complete a model.

units completed:
10 man tac squad
5 man terminator squad
captain
dreadnought

the challenge for tonight; assemble and finish the blue armor and yellow banding for:
10 man tact squad
5 man assault squad

Time limit: 3 hours from post time

Where I started at:

Cheers! And wish me luck!

I hope you got a couple boxes of clean casts

A bad set of mold lines can add an easy hour to a squad and throw off any time estimate

man 3 hours by! and the status update? well the blue is being done but it's unseasonably humid out so my primer took waaaaaaay to long to dry, so the yellow will have to wait but I should be on track to finish the blue by 1 am. Thanks for the support! at 1 pics of my progress will be posted. check back!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok so time is up for tonight!

the result: blue finished on assault marines and the basecoat for the tac squad is done. The humidity really delayed me, and the mold lines were a hassle on these guys (it sure has been a while since I painted marines!) tommorrow when i get back from work I will be ready to tackle my next challenge, yellow, blue and black! get them all done for the squad in 4 hours or less!

until then i leave you with pics of the army so far

Cheers!

Quick update, redid the highlighting on the assault marines and finished their yellow trim. I also started the metallic on them so when I get back from work, it's. . . to work? Can a hobby really be called work? Anyway I got a commission in the mail so I will post it up with this work as well.

The challenge btw will be to finish both squads in a week or less.

Cheers,
DG

Well I got the Assault marines (mostly) done. The last few bits left is the basing and the flamer for the assault marine and some touch up work on the red bolt pistols. It took all of 6 hours from box to this stage so I can actually have a 1 day turnaround for certain units!

anyway pics:

Your yellows are looking really rough. I know these are a speed paint deal, but an extra layer on the shoulder pad trim would really help. They have a yellowish green tinge going on thats noticeable from the splotchiness. Yellow is a notorious color for that

And it doesnt look like you're using and washes- trying a lil Devlan mud in hte cereases and seams would add some depth and make your highlights pop out better.

Redid the yellow thanks to mistress of minis suggestions and i think the result turned out much nicer. But since my camera crapped out, it will have to wait to for tonight (damn you short battery life!)

O H I am in the Webway...

I might wash the models with Badab Black or Devil Mud to give them a big rougher appearance but overall not bad. I personally like Gold trimming better on the Ultrasmurfs but the yellow you got looks alright.

I love the painting. That blue is rich, deep, and gorgeous.

If there's one thing, I'd prefer a bit more grittiness, but each to his own.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

Good stuff you got going there I might have you paint some of my minis

@EzeKK: Yeah, I wanted to try a more crisp look as opposed to a "dirty" style I tend to have!

@smiling Assassin: Thanks for the compliment to the blue! Maybe I will add a bit more grime to the bolters or the bottom of the feet. . .

@Jon Touchdown: Sure thing! I am currently booking, just email Dictatorgames@gmail.com for a quote!

@gunner762: Gracias! The way I get the blue is actually by first priming with a Krylon blue, followed by a wash with GW Asurmen blue, then a coat of Vallejo model color: Dark Blue (053) and then a highlight made of a 50/50 mix of Vallejo model color: Andrea Blue (065) and the Vallejo: Dark Blue. I'm a recent Vallejo convert (I've found the light!) and as soon as I get the conversion sheet and some spare scratch I will be using all my old GW Citadel Paints as model stands for painting.

and I finished the Assault Squad they just need to be based (WIP)

and everyone with their new yellow trim!

total painting time for assault marines ~4 hours
total painting time for the army so far ~20 hours

best!

Again, Id really suggest using some darker wash on these guys. It gets down in the recesses and help the detail lines stand out, and it can cover a myriad of little mistakes.

Its an easy step, and if this is going to be a display army for a painting service, the cleaner finish will take them up a notch from the basic tabletop level you have them at now.
