1750 Fallshimjaeger vs. 1750 American Nisei Rifles
Free For All – Late War

Hey all,

Trying my hand out at making batreps for Flames of War, hope you enjoy.

1750 German Fallshimjaeger

Command Section
2 Fallschimjaeger Infantry Platoons w/ 3 squads each

1 King Tiger
2 Jadgpanthers

1 88mm Platoon w/ 2 guns
1 Hummel Platoon w/ 3 guns

1750 American Nisei Rifles

Command Section + 2 Bazookas

3 Infantry Platoons w/ 3 squads each

1 A&P Platoon w/ 2 Bazookas
1 Mortar Platoon w/ 2 guns
1 I&R Platoon w/ 2 sections

1 Towed Tank Destroyer Platoon w/ 4 guns and 4 Bazookas
1 105mm Artillery Platoon w/ 4 guns
Priority Air Support (P47 Thunderbolts)

Terrain image is not quite right (as I didn’t take pictures to reference with), but should be close enough. Small village in the center surrounded by hills and forests, fairly straightforward.

Objectives were placed and both armies deployed.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Turn One – Germans

The 1st Fallshimjaeger platoon moves forward towards the center of the village, while supporting fire from the 88s kill a pair of infantry squads. An incautious American recon jeep gets blown to shreds by a Jagdpanther, but the King Tiger ends up having its mighty shell deflected by a gun shield.

Turn One – Americans

Despite having priority air support, the USAAF does not show up on the battlefield and the infantry is forced to go it alone for the time being. On the west flank, Able Platoon runs forward into the village while smoke rounds cover their advance from the German infantry. Baker moves up towards the village under normal movement, while Charlie and the Easy pioneers hold their ground for the time being. Hoping to suppress their counterparts, the artillery fires on the Hummel platoon, but can’t connect. Finally, the tank destroyer jeeps move forward on the west staying well out of sight of the German guns.

Turn Two – Germans

Seeing the American advance, the Germans hold their position and begin raining machine gun rounds down on the enemy infantry. The smoke prevents Able from taking many casualties despite their quick advance, but Baker takes more losses, bringing them almost down to half strength already. On the east, the heavy artillery fails to range in on the gone to ground American pioneers, while the King Tiger corrects its aim and vaporizes a single artillery gun.

Turn Two – Americans

American antitank guns appear on the west to cover the infantry advance on the town, but their firepower is insufficient to bother the heavily armoured Jagdpanthers. Smoke rounds divide the Fallshimjaeger platoon’s visibility in half while Able and Baker platoons pound them with direct fire while advancing into the town. A pair of Thunderbolts zoom down on the field, but one is shot down by a heavy antiaircraft round and the other evades wildly, spoiling its aim on the Hummels. Artillery fire crashes down around the Hummels, but they again remain unscathed.

Turn Three – Germans

The King Tiger continues its advance with the other Fallshimjaeger platoon following close by in support. Another 105mm gun is taken out by its powerful gun and the Hummels fire on Able Platoon, pinning them. The Jagdpanthers and infantry also pin Baker, stalling the American infantry advance in its tracks.

Turn Three – Americans

Neither Able nor Baker are willing to move forward under the German fire and they both hunker down in the town. The artillery switches to smoke rounds to protect the infantry and both the Fallshimjaeger platoon and German artillery observer are blanketed. Realizing their guns have little chance of damaging the Jagdpanthers, the tank destroyers load HE rounds and begin firing into the German infantry instead, killing two squads. The recon team creeps forward on the west, trying to avoid being noticed by the German tank-killers.

Turn Four – Germans

Fallshimjaeger and the King Tiger take the eastern side of the town, but their fire has little effect on the concealed American infantry. With their observer smoked, the Hummels advance forward to attempt to bring direct fire down in support of the eastern German advance. On the west, the Germans setup a hasty defensive position to protect their objective from the American attack.

Turn Four – Americans

Smoke rounds land on the German positions and both American Rifle Platoons charge forward! Defensive fire is insufficient to stop the hard-charging Americans and half of the Fallshimjaegers are cut down while the Jagdpanthers retreat from the assault. 3 Thunderbolts arrive on the field strafing the German infantry in the town, but again, one is shot down by a 88, and the remaining two completely miss the German infantry with their guns!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Turn Five – Germans

Realizing their brethren are in danger of being overrun the eastern Fallshimjaeger platoons abandons their position and moves west to support. The Jagdpanthers reestablish a new defensive line and combined fire from the German infantry teams penetrate the smoke and take Baker down to a single stand!

Turn Five – Americans

The American Captain orders the remnants of Baker Platoon out of the fight, and the battered survivors retreat to reorganize themselves. Able Platoon advances forward to take the objective, while trying to take out the remaining Germans nearby. The American tank hunter infantry disembark from their halftracks and move forward to support Able. On the east, smoke rounds land on the Fallshimjaegers and the King Tiger, and despite not having a bazooka handy, the pioneers of Easy Platoon charge forward and bail out the heavy German tank with a satchel charge!

Turn Six – Germans

Concentrated machine gun fire pours onto Able Platoon, and breaks their morale, sending them running from the field. On the east, the Hummels begin using their machine guns to try to keep the Americans back.

Turn Six – Americans

American air support returns to the field, and this time the P47 pilots are ready for the German guns as they dodge through flak and take out one of the 88s. Easy and Charlie platoons move forward on the east picking off the rear squads of the Fallshimjagers, while the remaining two squads of the other infantry platoon are taken out by the American antitank guns. Bazooka teams run forward and take out a Jagdpanther, forcing the remaining one into retreat.

Turn Seven – Germans

The last Jagdpanther moves back to contest the objective, while machine gunning down a Bazooka team. The last Fallshimjaeger platoon begins to mow down the advancing Americans on the east, supported by the Hummel machine guns.

Turn Seven – Americans

On the east, American infantry surges forward taking out a Hummel while smoke covers their flank from the German infantry. On the west, the last Jagdpanther is flanked, smoked and taken out by the antitank infantry, ending the game.

All in all, not too bad a game. I’m starting to think that taking additional smoke batteries in the form of Chemical Mortars or 105mm batteries is the way to go when trying to move a large number of infantry across the board. The Fallshimjaeger MG teams are killing machines when they can just stand there and blaze. Even though I have a lot of stands, it’s tough to make the walk of shame across the board under machine gun fire the entire way. Hope you enjoyed the batrep.

Love the report! MOre of them!

I am kinda interested at the fallschirmjager choices. No stummels, the king tiger choice along with jagdpanthers? (not even sure that is legal), -and- the flak 88s. Of course, I'm more interested in the fallschirmjager as I'm building it right now.

Great battle. Funny to see how quickly the king tiger went down when infantry support moved away! I hope you'll share more with us too.

Thanks guys.

Shotgun: Obviously the Fallshimjaegers are kitted up for mass anti-tank work (probably a bit too much). I get the feeling the infantry was really just there as placeholders, which is why there's no mortar support.

legoburner: Yeah, I was pretty surprised too when the King Tiger got killed. I didn't have a bazooka team in charge range and only two teams made contact. I was really just intending to force the King Tiger back, but bailing it out worked just as well.

I'm writing up my 40k Hardboyz batrep right now, but I hope to get some more FoW games in soon to show to you all. Any suggestions or questions about the batrep? Hopefully, it was easy to follow and can build some more interest in the game.

The maps were made with a Fantasy batrep program called Battle Chronicler. It's not quite made for Flames, but it sorta gets the job done.

The American Rifles were Nisei (Japanese American) and are rated as Fearless Trained. They're bought as Confident Veteran equivalents out of Festung Europa and their PDF is on the Battlefront website.
