What happens if you walk into your local GW store with a buddy and just ask to use one of their tables for a game?

QTF
but then, sometimes, they let you play. Then again, they may tell you there is a wait, or just tell you no. In depends on what events they are running, how busy they are, and how much longer they are open.

Usually, you get to play a game. Rarely, you have to wait for someone else to finish and then get to play a game. This can happen more when it's summer and kids are off school.

Well when I walk into a GW store I listen to the other gamers first. When I home in on a total newb I challenge him to a game, then pound him into the ground.
It's quite thrilling, sometimes chilling, very much like the Ascot opening day.

My red shirts are pretty good about kicking table hogs off and making sure everyone gets a game in. If you're nervous or anything, they're usually more than glad to find you an opponent.

Wait, you guys have to ask for a table? We just wander back to the tables and set up.
Actually its kinda funny because you basically have to walk through their back store room to get to the tables.

The last GW store I played in was a Battle Bunker, and they had plenty of tables (6 of them) for people to use out in the back area (you had to be a bunker member, but that wasn't difficult [require: own army, rulebook and codex, dice, templates and measuring thingy])
The local store isn't big enough to skin* a cat in by comparison.
*Yes, I'm aware that the phrase is "to swing a cat" but those places are many times larger than the broom cupboards we have for stores.

In the GW store that was formerly in St. Louis there was never much trouble getting a table unless a tourney was going on.

Huh... you guys are making me sound spoiled. My FLGS always has at least 5 tables set up for play, and can set up more.
Augustus, you should come across the river to O'fallon, Il. Fantasy Games is a great store to game at.

I might head east over the Mississippi some day, but in St. Charles at the Fantasy Shop we have a good group of people that meet for WHF on mondays and 40k on tuesdays. I'm trying to get out there more often after not playing for a little while.

It probably goes a lot smoother if you brought WHFB, WH40k, or LotR armies and not, say, War Machine, Battletech, or Heavy Gear.

The person I ask will point at the tables and say "You know where they are, why are you asking me?"
Some Saturdays they'll be full up (usually due to an event), but we'll usually set a spell at the paint bar to wait for one to open up, which usually isn't any longer than 15 minutes.
They'll boot ya for playing a non- GW game of course. And I think the little stores will boot you for playing specialist games, even. Which is absurd to the nth degree. But that's the one advantage of paying retail and supporting your local GW, every once in awhile, when the manager is being unreasonable, you can subtly suggest that you can always play elsewhere, and you only pay where you play.

o_0 Battle Bunker with only 6 tables? Every regular GW around here has at least that many. The bunker has something like 25-30 tables ( and I believe they are usually 4x8). Even have a Gothic Table. How cool?

I was just talking about my local GW. My FLGS is infinitely nicer, with tons of tables set up and players always there. If that fails I have about 8 other LGS to pick from, some friendly, some not.

My LGS has 3 upstairs and 2 downstairs, which is usually more than enough. my school gaming club however only has 1 really, which sucks when more than 1 game wants to happen.

6 at a Battle Bunker? I live in Lexington, Kentucky, a reasonably-sized city, but not large enough to really warrant an actual GW store. We have two local stores here with GW style tables set up, the larger of the two with table space and terrain to support 11 fully terrained games at once. I suppose we're lucky. The stories from the typical GW stores just makes me appreciate my FLGS all the more.

Miniature Market has a nice little set up, too.
Plus, their product is 20% off.
They also hold a tournament (usually around 1500 points) EVERY month.
It's on Watson, right by "Uncle Sam's."
It's a nice place to play, if you dno't have something better at home.
