So I dropped my Ogryns and deployed a Punisher Leman Russ in order to try and save my battered reputation... what a waste of time! One crazy Marine and a Melta Gun later... "BOOM"
So what am I to do, the Punisher Heavy 20 worked wonders for the turn it was in play, but playing in a Dawn of War scenario allowed the sneaky marines to get to close. My night vision rolls were laughable!
My heavy weapons teams put a up a brave front but to no avail, once the marines were close enough they picked them apart! Flamers still rock though! All of the Marines i managed to put down were burnt to a crisp with the odd exception of a lucky lasgun!
The marines didn't have it all their way, a valiant missile launcher team took apart their Rhino and my previously laudable Ratlings played a small part in salvaging a few points but not enough!
More Tanks!
So when does the Imperial Guard come into its own? From the three serious games I've played i reckon you have to field over 1500 points and play on a larger scale board to feel the full effect of the Guard Force!

Guard comes into competitive play once you hit 1500 or so. At least thats what its been like for me.
Anything smaller and you cant field as much of the tank support as guardsmen need.

The previous battle I reported was a very similar outcome against a Tau player, who was adamant that he would not play more than 1000 pts at the local GW nor attempt to on a small scale board! I have to wonder whether he did this with the knowledge that a small scale Imperial Force would be easy pickings in comparison to his!

with a kitted out veteran squad only costing slightly over 100 points, 130 or so i dont see why this is the case. you dont have to field a huge infantry platoon, vetrans count as troops. If you are trying to go armor heavy at low points it is very doable, hell i just worked out a list with 3 Chimeras and squads and 2 lemans. Hq is Primaris Psyker. With smaller point games the trick is to try lists you other wise would never think of. Hellhounds are cheap too. Think about giving chimeras H.Flamers, i love them.

IMP Guard gets good when you mech up everything X.X. Punisher is also very lackluster. If you want a tank that will instill fear into marines get a Plasma Cannon Russ. That thing will make any Smurf player FEAR you.
Can you post your list?

Actually if ya wanna mess with marines in smaller games you can. How you say? The entire fast attack section. 1 russ. A few vets and full fast attack. Vendettas, chem cannons and sentinels give marines problems. Try more fast attack vs marines at small points and you will start to compete again. Probally win if you play it right. Never count out demo vets vs marines. Good luck.

Yeah the punisher is too short-ranged to deal with infantry like that... 24" puts you dangerously close to a melta-gun attack. I would rather a Demolisher or executioner with plasma sponsons if you're gonna be that close... wipe out entire squads in a salvo and you won't have to worry about those pesky meltas.

Actually at a 1000 pt games the IG is a VERY powerful force...but I noticed that you got expensive units like ogryns as well as the punisher....the IG codex is blessed with very efficient and cheap damage dealing units and at 1000 pts it would be better to take advantage of those...example, hydras, veterans, platoon command squads, chimeras, and rough riders (for counter assault)...it is very easy to do a 60-70 model army at 1000 pts with a few tanks thrown in...
