Hey! Noob here so apologies if i've posted in the wrong forum area etc (please don't set me on fire!)

I played IG, Orks, Iron Warriors, Khorne and Ultramarines up until about the age of 17 (about six years ago now) and have come back across my old models. whether its the heat, or just pure nostalgia i'm beginning to hear the beat of the drum again and am seriously considering coming back to the game.

I've been stalking the forum for a few days now to try and pick up just how much different things are since I played last...! I'm in the process of moving out with my girlfriend so money is a key factor here. Im considering going back to my green routes and digging out the Orks - I could re use / paint some of my old models although alot are the static pose models from the 2nd Edition (?) box set.

I'm thinking that maybe I could get the Assault on Black Reach box set and using the orks from that - as well as converting the dreadnought and terminators (I saw some 'orkified' terminators onlnie and thought they looked great!) This would give me a solid core of units as well as being fairly cost effective.

I can bring forward from my old collections a warboss, a couple of chaos terminators (for conversion), a dozen or so decently modelled / painted boyz, a couple of wartrukks and a space marine predator and dreadnought (again for conversion) so I think I could have a fairly solid core...

What are your thoughts on the above...? I'm primarily concerned about whether you guys feel the terminator / dreadnought conversions (if done correctly) would be accpetable...and any other points you can suggest etc?

Thanks in advance!

dont bother with AoBr unless you want to play SM as well or have someone who WILL buy them off you.

2x battle force is $320 and you get 40 boyz some nobz and a trukk and 3 warbikers.
smash a hole in the vhielcles and stick some orky stuf on them and theres a couple of looted wagons.
gazzghull is great (stick him with some nobz and a painboy and nigh on invincible squad) that brings us up to $380.
2x lootas and burnas box (either one) should give you a nice kick against swarm armys (burnas) or do well against anything (lootas) for another $80 or so. $460 and you've got a good enough army.

i've spent $1500 (aus) on mine and have.
80-ish boyz.
8 stormboyz (7 are smashed to hell thanks to gangstah wannabees.)
10 burnas.
2 meks with kustom mega blaster.
1 warboss with big choppa..
1 warboss with PC.
gazzghull.
15 nobz (2 metal are broken)
1 trukk.
1 looted wagon.
3 killa kans (unassembled)
weird boy.
6 warbikers (almost completly converted to nob bikers)
10 gretchin and runtheard.

mines a good enough army, i would kill for a couple more trukks or a battlewagon but can't help it atm.

If you don't have the main rule book I would highly suggest the AOBR. Hell if you have models you dont want you can sell them to someone. Oh and the termies make a great mega nob conversion, I can post mine sometime if you want to see them.

Very interested to see those rednekgunner

My final army was Iron Warriors and I really enjoyed getting into the conversions etc - so for this Ork army i'd want to get to grips with some intensive conversions!

I'm thinking a running theme for the army could be 'Marine Lootas' - fun for me and brings it all together!

I also thought that the rule book could be handy in the AoBR box and the templates (cant remember if they were included?). I'm planning to stay away from Thraka and other specials, purely through personal preference.

To the units that I have already and plan to get from AoBR, id be looking to add maybe 30 grots, 50+ boyz and a couple of wartrukks / wartraks / buggies and of course a battlewagon (I actually had a heavily converted one that moved but gave it away when I 'quit' before nooooo)

that kool.
but you should know, grots are quite useless now, my squad of 10 cant stand up to a squad of 10 guardsmens lasguns...

your 50 probly couldnt stand up to a devastator squad (no offence)

AoBr does come with rulebook and templates.
but i really dont find it value for money (but i always think to buy stuff in bulk since im an ork DX)

I can post all of my ork conversions later this week.

I like the idea of the marine lootaz.

The AOBR comes with orks, marines, mini rule book (it has all the rules in it), dice (including scatter), templates, movement sticks, and a scenario to play.

I can respect the no special characters, I use Ghaz because I had fun building/painting.

Too bad about the BW loss, that sounded like it would be awesome. I built mine on a Land Raider. (i'll take a pic of that one two)

Thanks for the feedback...only considering the AoBR for the potential conversions I can bring about from the SM stuff!

Look forward to the pics rednekgunner

Also, thanks for the posts everyone - all brilliant feedback and much appreciated

Hey there and welcome back to 40k.

It sounds like you've got some great ideas for conversions and for getting the most out of the AoBR set, if you choose to go that route.

The mini rulebook is pretty sweet for carrying to games (and nice to have handy when the recollection of a rule or two get a little fuzzy), and, at least for now, that box is the only place to get plastic Deff Koptas (not that converting them from bikes wouldn't be loads of fun. ).

Best of luck on (re)building your Marine Lootaz...

I think AOBR is a great deal. you'd get everything you need for a fair price. range finders, fancy green templates 5th ed rule book. If you want to convert the SM dread and termies those are a cheap way to do it. I say go for it.

@ ComeFindMe,
Despite certian opinions AoBr is a good value, and quiet good for conversion fodder, espicialy since you already have a fair amount of minis,as rednekgunner said the SM terminators can be used to convert some pretty cool Meganobz & the Dread can easiely be Orked up.
You also get the mini rule book, and shouldn't have much trouble trading off the SM tactical sqaud to further bolster your ork force.

Great feedback guys, thanks!

What are your thoughts on Kannons / Lobbas / Zzap guns etc? I just looked on the GW site and the prices for these nearly made my heart stop!

I'd guess that I could make a fairly good job of coming up with these models from scratch - do you think opponents would have issues with this? I mean, i'd make sure they look similar - I have a spare lascannon turret floating somewhere that would make a great Zzap gun...?

I'm hoping that all being well, I can build up a 'horde' - and from that, I can pick and choose specific lists (as opposed to what I used to do which was plan out a1500 list to start and then buy the appropriate models...good fun but little selection options!)

1: For making kannonz, zzapgunz or lobbaz simply buy the guard heavy weapon box and convert
some useful bits in there.

2: Havent seen ork termies yet.

3: If your interested in making an ork dread from the black reach box, then maybe i can help, heres 2 ive made so far (along with other ork stuff)
