Subject: New Devestator Squad, not sure about heavy weapon choices
|
 |
Death-Dealing Devastator
|
Soon I will be expanding my Imperial Fists army with a ten-man Devestator Squad. The products I intend to buy are, of course, the Devestator Squad itself and a Combat Squad. Though I'm still not sure as to which heavy weapons I should outfit the squad with, any ideas? At the moment I'm seriously considering two Plasma Cannons, a Heavy Bolter and a Lascannon. Is that a good selection? "Yay" or "Nay?"

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the only cost effective choice for a Dev squad is 4 X missile launchers.
The Dev box is still a good buy, you can give the plasma cannons to your tac squads and save 20 points a piece!
Also the multi-melta is solid gold for tac squads in drop pods.

Thanks, I've been told that by other Space Marine players. I don't own any Drop Pods at the moment and I'm not the least bit concerned about point costs because I have an extreemly small collection, so I enjoy pimping out my Marines as much as possible.

The ML is probably the most flexible and cost effective option. If you were going to take different weapons I'd take them in pairs so that if you combat squaded them you could keep the teams running with redundant choices. The weapon options you selected wastes at least 1 of the weapons and if paired up you end up with at least 1 odd pairing.
Cheers

The missile launcher is the best choice because, while expensive (well, compared to not having a missile launcher, not compared to the other options) , it can do any job, something lascannons or heavy bolters can't do. I think plasma cannons are also a great choice, S7 with the generous scatter rules means it is decent light anti-tank, and AP2 means it is infinitely better vs MEQs and Terminators, as well as still being great anti-horde.

My favorite Dev loadout is Lascannon x 1, RL x 3. In non- KP missions, I combat squad them into
- 5 Marines, Seargent (w/signum), Lascannon
- 5 Marines, 3 Rocket Launchers
These two little squads have always done me great, and the price tag isn't completely unreasonable. I developed this tactic after missing with my Tactical Lascannons on 2's over half the time!

Now to just try to roll above a 2 when attempting to penetrate the front armor of a Rhino. LOL
We give Jamal a spotter with a rangefinder, finally get a hit, and guess which little Jenkins forgot to plug the powerpack into the wall to charge apparently....
The hits just keep on comin'...

Devastator Squads should always have the same weapons, so they can be effective when attacking targets that those weapons are designed for. This is the reason missile launchers are so effective. They can fulfill two roles with the same weapon better than any other can. I would suggest either four missile launchers or four plasma cannons.

In the previous Codex I ran either HBolters or Missile Launchers. In the new Dex, the Missile Launchers dropped in price 5 points each...
So, I wouldn't say they're the only cost effective choice, but they're the most cost effective choice. I think at this point, they're the default, but HBolters still are worthwhile if that type of firepower is something your list is short on.

Would have to go with Missile Launchers.
That being said, I've always thought a Razorback would be a decent purchase for a Dev squad if you've got the points. Gives you an extra heavy weapon.

I usually run 4 ML as well and the never fail me. They even beat a Lictor in CC last week.
But General Retreat's idea of 3 ML 1 Las and Combat Squads seems like it might be a pretty good one. With a screen name that funny, how can he be wrong?

2x plasma cannon + 2x missile launcher would be my build... if I absolutely had to use devastators.
good against light vehicles, heavy infantry, and light infantry... a pretty wide spread of targets it can kill.
