My question is this, what do you do with a model that has a BS but no ranged weapon. For instance a Demon Prince (in CSM) always counts as armed with a single close combat weapon. There are psychic power to use in the shooting phase, but is there something I'm missing. Another example is the Necron Flayed One, armed only with claws, but once again there is a value for BS. I would think that the BS would be 0.

Thanks for the help.

just because they have no ranged weapon doesnt mean they dont know how to shoot one

if they don't have a ranged weapon its a dead stat.... it happens.

Probably somewhere I shouldn't be

IIRC, it used to be that way, but it was a headache, so now they all have a full statline, and you just can't make any shooting attacks without a ranged weapon.

Some models have a BS but Don't have Ranged Weapons, it happens. Sometimes Models who cant have ranged weapons have BS 0, but its not consistent.

Just remember that if a model has to ever use its BS for some reason, it always uses it's own unless otherwise stated, and a model with BS 0 auto fails any checks using the stat.

The BS can be used in PS when next to a gun emplacement.

For example.

"It is not the bullet with your name on it that should worry you, it's the one labeled "To whom it may concern. . ."

... come on Gwar your out of practice the correct answer is he can use a Psychic power that has a weapons profile, these still require a roll to hit to be used (though the number of players that forget) ... a Daemon prince with mark of Tzeentch can fire 2 different psychic shooting attacks (see FAQ ... or in Gwars case take cyder then see FAQ)

A new day, a new time zone.

IIRC in the original 3rd ed CSM codex, the demon prince model had no BS, but it was possible to buy him a gun as wargear.

Giving all models a BS, even ones that seem like they would never have the circumstances to shoot, means that if an odd case that requires a BS occurs at a later date, you're not going to have an issue like that again.

Almost correct. He did not have the option to buy a gun but he was given the option (via a White Dwarf article) to buy minor psychic powers, some of which required the model to have a Ballistic Skill.

Lol I've never noticed this before, his rules say "Daemon Princes may be given a Mark of Chaos and Gifts(including psychic powers) from the Chaos Armoury." But then every psychic power in the armoury is marked as "Sorcerers Only"

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

If ballistic skill represents the model's ability to use a weapon, it makes sense that they would have a stat for it even if they don't have access to ranged weapons. And as said, it can still be used for gun encampments and the like (although there are a lot of models without hands...).

As an interesting side note, neither Weirdboys nor Old Zogwort use their ballistic skill for anything, but Weirdboys still have a BS of 2 because that's the ork standard, and Zogwort has a BS of 0 because he's blind.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.
