I want all of you who read this topic to first read this story:
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/story?id=8322658&page=1

After I read this story I was pretty disgusted and angry. The pettiness that abounds in this story reminds me of just how intolerant "political" people are in this country. God, these people are the whiniest heads you will ever meet. "I am not going to shop at Whole Foods because I don't like what their CEO say." Grow a freaking pair and get over it. He is a human just like you and me and should be allowed to express his opinion. I would expect that from the "party of tolerance" (well tolerant so long as you agree with them) that we would find people politely disagreeing, but no. Now I don't mind if people choose to shop somewhere because they don't care for the service or because the poor quality of the product but for this? This is just as bad as when the Evangelicals in the US were boycotting Wal-Mart because they didn't say "Merry Christmas." If only I could just beat petty people with a garden hose....oh, that would be awesome....

A note to the consumer: I am not opposing free speech or freedom of expression, I am merely expressing how frustrated I am with the petty squabbles and the like. Sorry for the confusion.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

Is it bad that they boycotted Wal-Mart because of Christmas issues, no not at all. People have a right to do that so if they do, then they're being american.

But I do like the idea of a voluntary donation. That way supporters can pay for it and non-supporters won't have to.

Hmm, A CEO that reduced his own salary to $1.,.. who doesn't want to increase the national deficent and has a good healthcare plan for his employees?
GADS what a horrible person. Definetly boycott his chain of stores that helps supply the country with healthy options that reduce the need for a socially funded healthcare system.

Too bad my local HEB is closer than Whole Foods. *smirk*

Why? Whether I agree or disagree, the right to economic free speech is fundamental. I'm not even opening the article to see what the CEO is talking about because its not relevant. A friend of mine used to boycott Carl's Jr. because they supporting antiabortion groups. I disagreed with doing that but not her right to do that (awesome burgers, hence my disagreement).

Besides Whole Foods sucks. They were blocked from the feds from merging with anotyher company because they were effectivelycreating a predatory pricing situation.

Definitely, everyone has the right to boycott things for their own reasons, I just hate it when those reasons are petty. I left the Evangelical movement because I felt it becoming more and more petty, and focused only on a couple issues, but I digress.

His options that he listed in his op-ed are great suggestions, and I think that there are some that he lists that should be taken into consideration.

Free speech, and the consequences there of are a protected right.
Sure, you can say your piece and you are perfectly within the law to do so.
And other people are just as legally protected to disagree with you and stop spending their money in your stores.

About to eat your Avatar...

I am not sure how people could be so angry about consumers choosing to take their dollar elsewhere. Do you work at whole foods? Are you going to lose your job because of this? Will whole foods even go out of business because of this?

My dollar can be spent wherever and for whatever reason I see fit, it is called voting with your dollars. The main argument against the health care reform is that people will no longer be able to vote effectively like this anymore. What exactly is wrong with this situation?

If my dollar decides that a CEO is evil, my dollar has made a decision, and it directly impacts the companies I choose to leave. Sorry to say it, but the fact remains that Whole Foods DOES suck, screw them. Occasionally they have decent deals on stuff like beans, but everything else is just priced to be posh. I don't care that you have more overhead or blablabla, that is your problem, I just want a good burrito from your store... and your burritos are terrible.

I choose to not shop at Whole Foods for a few reasons but making pseudo-health burritos is BLASPHEMY.... he who blasphemes does NOT get my dollar!!!

JEB_Stuart wrote:Definitely, everyone has the right to boycott things for their own reasons, I just hate it when those reasons are petty

You are petty ... meh, I am going to buy a burrito from Berkeley Bowl because they do not blaspheme my burritos...

Agreed. I've been boycotting 7-11 for about a decade now, simply because an employee once refused me water (Which is illegal here). These guys are voting with their wallets.

Sorry. Should have clarified. I live in the desert, where it routinely gets to be 110+ in the summertime. Denying a thirsty man water is just wrong, and can lead to death or serious injury. People whom, if they were on fire, I wouldn't spit on, would still get a drink of water from me upon request.

Its a state law in Arizona.

It applies to private citizens too. You don't have to invite a stranger in, or even give them a glass, but you can't turn them down at least a drink from the hose.

Tolerance has nothing to do with being polite. Rather, it is based on refraining from the forcible removal of dissent. Where force is physical, not verbal.

Example: I'm a pretty tolerant guy, but I'm also rude, uncouth, and generally aggressive.

I see. We have a similar thing over here in restaurants/cafes etc, where it's illegal to charge for tapwater.

Makes sense given the climate over there I guess. Little suprised that it applies to citizens too though. That seems a far too friendly of a law to be in the USA... you are allowed to shoot them still right ?

Everybody is entitled to express their opinion in ways they deem fit as long as it falls within the realm of lawful behaviour. I boycott (as much as possible anyways) Walmart, but that's because I'd much rather buy American made products, even at a higher price, than Chinese. Before somebody jumps in and starts spouting RACIST!!! against Asians, it's not because of the color of their skin, but because of their Government's policies. That and I'd like to do my part in helping American workers keep their jobs.

While I don't agree with the reasons the people are boycotting Whole Foods, I have to acknowledge their right to do so. It doesn't prevent me from calling them dirty hippies though

Your side is always the "will of the people" the other side is always fundamentalist, extremist, hatemongers, racists, anti- semitic nazies with questionable education and more questionable hygiene. American politics 101.

I think the only reason this is really possible is because Whole Foods isn't just a retail outlet, they also sell an image. Walmart is the cheapest place to get stuff you need to not die, Whole Foods is where you go to spend $2 on a tomato. A big part of why people shop there is because they see themselves as progressive, enlightened people. For many of those folks, health care is seen as a right, not a privilege, and for the CEO of the company to basically say the opposite is going to annoy them.

I enjoy when CEOs, athletes, entertainers and even politicians really share their personal beliefs on topics. It's always an interesting insight and rarely fails to change how I feel about that person. That said, everybody knows to do so is horribly stupid. If you're selling something, you want to stay above ideology and politics. It's just the way it's done.

From that article and everything I've heard, this guy, and Whole Foods in general, is kinda sleazy. This might just be a tipping point.

1. a system of principles or tenets, as of a church.
2. a specific tenet or doctrine authoritatively laid down, as by a church: the dogma of the Assumption.
3. prescribed doctrine: political dogma.
4. a settled or established opinion, belief, or principle.

What's even more interesting is that I chose the name due a sort of ironic appeal, back when I was far more of a hipster. Over time it has begun to be increasingly applicable, though rarely with respect to those sets commonly perceived as dogmatic.

To be fair, Whole Foods is a business that should not exist. They artificially inflate the prices of produce based on the false pretext that 'organic' equates to 'healthy'.

Great cheese section though.

That is a weird reason to stop eating fried chicken...

But I think that is a chain wide thing. The Chick-fil-a here closes on Sundays as a point to allow the employees time for church.
