Subject: questions about superglue, simple green, and shoulderpads.

Hey folks i have a few questions that maybe you could help with.
1. I'm looking for 'simple green' in Canada and having trouble finding it. Any idea of Canadian store that definitely stock it, or an equivalent product?
2. Is there something out there that will dissolve / remove superglue without destroying a plastic mini? I bought some bits that are glued together and I'd like to separate them.
3. Anyone know if GW or anyone else sells lion shoulderpads, something like these:-
They just look too cool, and I'm sure I've seen them in the fluff art before.

As far as i know, GW has no equivalent to those shoulder pads.
As for the super glue, i would surprised if there was such a product, since the glue actually melts the plastic pieces together to bond them to each other. Therefore, anything that would dissolve the glue would also most likely dissolve the plastic as well. With careful use of a knife, you should be able to cut the bits apart, but make sure to go slow, and have sharp knife

You may mean Plastic Glue. That is what melts the plastic together. Super Glue only holds the plastic together. You can try freezing the mini for 24 hours. This will weaken the super glue and make it easily pop off with little effort (depending on the amount of glue used). If a large amount of super glue was used, it would take alot of force. You can try, apply a little force, then freezing it again, prying it little by little between freezing.
I have tried the freezing technique on model I purchased second hand to great sucess but the larger amounts of super glue made the separation more difficult. I was able to separate the pieces but one would be damaged beyond repair.

I was under the impression that super glue had a similar melting effect to plastic, but i may have been wrong.

Super glue does NOT dissolve/melt the plastic together. Its an acrylic resin that polymerizes. Dont confuse it with the solvent based styrene bonding cements.
Simple Green, or better yet, SuperClean(big purple bottle look for it at autoparts stores if Wlamart hasnt taken over Canada yet!) can dissolve the bond on the CA/super glues. Its designed as a degreaser and as is soaks in it works its way in between the paint and plastic, and longer soaks it works its way in between the glue and the plastic- to the assembled figs tend to fall apart with minimal pressure. There are also various ' de-bonding' agents available at most hobby shops. Nail polish remover is an option as well- but I only recommend that for all metal models, as even the non acetone types can melt plastics.

Super-glue is a Cyanoacrylate, which under normal circumstances will not 'melt' the plastic together, but will create a strong bond. Plastic Cement, as sold by Testors, Revell, Tamiya and others is designed to slightly melt the plastic before drying, creating a 'weld' if you will.
As far as removing it, check this out http://www.supergluecorp.com/removingsuperglue.html.
I've also used super-glue remover, available at your local DYI/hardware store, as well as the freezing technique mentioned. I am not sure if the remover will damage the plastic.
Good Luck!!
