Hello Dakkites, i'm a regular of the site and enjoy it immensely. Over the years ive been a pretty fanatical warhammer 40k player, but recently my eyes have strayed to warhammer fantasy. After much deliberation I have decided that the Vampire Counts seem to be an army I'd enjoy, so with only a small understanding of the rules and a novices outlook on my armybook I have constructed this list for you to critic and make better. Please and thanks for the help.

The list seems to lack hitting power. Also, I don't think you can take a magical item (like the Standard of Hellish Vigour or the Sceptre de Noirot) multiple times in an army.

Airmaniac is right- no duplication of magic items. Demons of Chaos have other things going on, which might have thrown you off if you've been checking that book out.
Give it another go?

Yea my understanding of the rules is mediocre at best. So even the battle standards have a one per army limit? I'll rework the list, maybe i'll have points for more units now then, seemed kind of thin to me. Thanks!

Back again Dakkites. Ok so I made another list, just scrubbed the last one and made a new one with the magic duplication no no in mind. I kind of want a necromancer with the Sceptre De noirot in it but i ran out of points. So i'd apreciate the advice about the army in general and especially the army list. PLEASE bash it if it needs to be bashed, i plan to spend money here soon and need to get my facts straight.
Vampire counts
Vampire lord-315
forbidden lore-Dark acolyte-Avatar of death
Flayed Hauberk
Vampire-175
Master of the black arts
Tomb blade
Vampire-175
Lord of the dead-Avatar of death
Blood drinker
CORE
Skeleton warriors(20)-205
full command-banner of the undead legion
Skeleton warriors(20)-195
Full command-spears
Banner of hellfire
Corpse cart-100
Unholy lodestone
Corpse cart-100
Unholy lodestone
Dire wolves(10)-80
Crypt ghouls (10)-80
Special
Grave guard(20)-335
full command-great weapons
banner of the barrows
Black Knights(5)-195
Full command-Royal standard of Strigo
My only concern(other than things i'm not aware of because i'm new to this game) Is the proper places to put my magical banners, not sure which unit some are most effective in. Otherwise the basice strategy is simple, the line moves forward with all 3 vampires spread among the force, probably one in each block of infantry. They all 3 are equiped to handle themselves in close combat as well as keep the army bolstered in numbers and zombie reinforcements. the dire wolves and black knights screen the flanks of my army and stay on the lookout for juicy gunline or War machines while the Grave guard bolstered by their banner and the deadly vampire in their rank tear into what my oponent have to offer. Thanks for the hopefully soon coming advice!

Mighty Chosen Warrior of Chaos

The most important part of the vc army are the characters, so it pays to think their item/power-setup well. Generally you should make vampire concentrate heavily on casting or heavily in combat/utility. If you try to mix up concepts too much, you aren't good in any.
Here's an example setup of characters for 2000-2250 games.
Vampire Lord, Magic level 3 (General)
Skull Staff, Helm of Commandment, Forbidden Lore, Master of Black Arts,+Some of the Master abilites depending which units you use
-450
This is a pure caster character who should definetly be kept out from combats. As he has little protection, the vc-army should have several good bodyguard units for him to hide in. Altough he's expensive and may not rack in kills in melee, he sure can tip the game in your favor in the magic phase (and he also has the handy helm of commandment to boost nearby units).
Vampire #1, Battle Standard Bearer
Sword of Might, Flayed Hauberk, Talisman of Lycni, Walking Death, Infinite Hatred
-225
This guy is a fast utility character that can bring some static combat resolution & kills where needed. Altough he has a good armor save, you don't really
wan't him to go against really nasty enemy monsters such as dragons.
Vampire #2
Balefire Spike, Dispel Scroll, Black Periapt, Dread Knight, Infinite Hatred
-200
This is also a combat/utility character that can boost your cavalry units. He also brings in some magic defense and extra dice for your boss via the periapt.
That's 875 in characters, which should leave plenty of points for your troops. Now, if you go by this character setup, you need couple of large units for the vampire lord to hang out with. Unit of 20 grave guard with shields and full command+warbanner is a great bunker-unit, and doesn't cost too much (things considered). The reason why they have shields instead of GWs is that they are more survivable (and also, you can killing blow heavily armored stuff with wight's hand weapons too). As a back up bodyguard, you could have either 20 ghouls or 20 skeles (remember to include champion in both of these). You could also include another hitty unit in addition to the black knights. A Vhargulf or a small unit of blood knights could be good. (also, 5 bk's is kinda small, 6-7 would be better).

Thanks alot fo the input, i wasnt really trying to make the list super competetive, just fluffy and still good. I'm starting the game with a bunch of other friends so we'll be playing together mostly. One thing is i'm used to 40k...and the point cost of some of these HQ units seem a bit rediculous. I'm still unconvinced that the HQ units i put together in my last list arent good, i just didnt give them everything they could have so i could fit more of an amry into my army...perhaps i'm wrong in my thinking.
