This came up yesterday, so I've got 6 censer bearers ranked up against an enemy unit, with the poison gas, do they just take 1 toughness test for each censer bearer or is it every one in base contact takes it 3 times (for those touching it) for a total of 18 toughness tests? I'm confuzzled because the army book entry isn't very clear

18 Toughness tests seems a bit overkill: That's causing people potentially two or three ranks back to keel over.

I do not recall any information in the FAQ, so I'm no final answer. However, I'd say it is 18 toughness checks... but at 3 tests a model, not 18 throughout the unit.

I'd say 6 Toughness tests, 1 per bearer.

It says "All models in base contact with one or more models armed with a censer must take a toughness test"

I'm guessing then that it doesn't matter how many are in base contact, as it does say one or more models may be armed with a censer, but it still only confers a toughness test, meaning 1.

There are multiple readings of the army book based on when it was printed. Example: there are 3 current prints of the most recent skaven book. One with a brown border, one without, and a 2nd version of the brown border. Some of the wargear items are worded differently, such as the warlock wargear also.

I'm pretty certain, not 100%, as the reason I do not play the unit is my book has "a model in base contact with a censer bearer takes a toughness test." So to me the model would take 1 toughness test, not 2 if it was in base with 2 models. IE a front rank of 5 models, takes 5 toughness tests. Hope that helps. Also there's nothing in the FAQ about it, as i've checked a couple times.

If you are in contact with 1 or more Bearer models, take a toughness test.
1 test regardless of how many Bearers you are in contact with.

That straight forward, assuming you have the latest print

And you would be wrong, based on the rule you're quoting below.

Very simple and clear. Each affected model has to take a Toughness test, no matter how many Censer Bearers are in contact. So if 6 Censer Bearers are in contact with 4 models, the 4 models take 4 Toughness tests. If, OTOH, 6 Censer Bearers are in contact with 8 enemy models, then those 8 enemy models have to take 8 Toughness tests.

I was referring to the tests the Censers themselves have to take...

Its, unfortunately, why I do not think Censer Bearers should be in a large unit. They are excellent vs cavalry in general. When its usually 5-7 cav, vs 5-7 censer bearers. That's where they shine. If you didn't have to take plague monks i'd take them all the time. Their points are a little steep for my liking, but they are probably about right with their weapons being magical, and having a chance for double wounds.
