Does anyone happen to remember (or still have) an issue of White Dwarf which had a LotR painting guide for the "main cast" which included a really good technique for painting red? Specifically, it was around the time things like Mines of Moria/Battle for Weathertop came out, and the issue of WD had a Balrog on the cover. My GF's looking for it for painting her Sisters of Battle, specifically their tabards. Alternatively, does anyone know if it was collected or reprinted anywhere? A bit of a longshot, but I'm sure someone on Dakka has an encyclopaedic collection of WD issues and a memory to match.

Sorry, don't know which it was in... but if it's what I think then it could well be where I picked up my red, it's more 'earthy' than blood red as most people try.

Base - Scorched brown, highlight Red Gore - successive highlights add dwarf flesh to the red gore, for extreme highlights add a bit of bleached bone in too.

Awesome, that sounds right and helps a lot, thankyou. If you happen to dig up the issue number, that'd be even better.

Edit: this isnt the way done in the tut.
But this is just a simple way i use for a stand out type of red as it goes from both extreme colours, and looks pretty good.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

It might be around US WD#264

That issue has the hobbits painting tut, and the only red is for pippin's cloak. An issue earlier or later is the tut for Aragorn and Boromir.

I seem to remember a better tut, but can't find it off-hand. The only two issues I have with the Balrog on the cover are #265, and #283 (Shadow and Flame)

Probably somewhere I shouldn't be

Also a quick handy tip: If you're going to go into orange for your final highlights (which you should, or you'll go pink), you can bring it back to a richer red by glazing it with thinned Baal Red wash.
