Subject: Maybe misplaying Empire Volley Gun

So - after having used/shot at by the Empire Volley gun, I came across the following in the Volley Gun description: roll to hit as normal. Now, I've been under the impression that once you roll (and hopefully pass) the artillery dice, you see how many shots you have fired, you then just rolled to wound with the number of shots. I'm now under the impression the artillery dice are just showing you how many shots you get, then I'm having to roll to hit (with normal modifiers), then wound. Which is correct?

If you have to roll to hit, that means you do exactly what it says.
Artillery == number of shots, instead of a fixed number. Autohit ranged weapons are being removed.

Nosferatu's right. In the previous Empire book, the Artillery die showed the numbers of hits you scored (except at long range, where you scored half the roll, and the strength was only 4).
Now the roll is the number of SHOTS you get to take, but even at long range you get the full number and strength.
The previous version was a little rough not just on blocks, but on skirmishers. Imagine a unit of skirmishers hiding on the edge of a forest, with only one guy visible, but the Helblaster scores thrity hits. All the guys hiding effectively behind trees are all red mist, thanks to that one guy.

Ah - so the gaming group may not be purposely playing outside the rules, just not within current rules. I had just taken the word of the other Empire player. We'll make that adjustment then. Does anyone know if the Dwarf Organ gun is worded the same way?

Regrettably, the Organ still generates automatic hits.

Yup. As noted, the previous edition of the Empire book had auto-hitting Volley Guns, but the current one has to roll to hit. And the Dwarf one still auto-hits.
