Hey all,

Quick question for you all regarding deployment type and missions. In general pick up games or games with friends, do you roll randomly for deployment and mission type, or do you sit down and pick out something that you'd both want to play?

As an example, a buddy of mine and I recently had a game with my orks (infantry horde) vs his guard (static infantry guard). We rolled and got Pitched Battle I believe its called (the table halves one). We also rolled for mission type and it was objectives. I placed mine close to the center, so did he (oddly enough) and I placed the last one slightly into my deployment zone (following all the distance rules, etc). I had won the dice off, so I started setting up my orks' two troops and 1 HQ half way across the table, right around the center line... and able to deploy right over both center objectives and in front of the third one. My friend complained that this gave the orks an unfair advantage... ugh... so we just decided to play spearhead instead (the table quarters one).

Anyway, he was complaining about the randomness. Personally, I like it (and not just because I proceeded to mop the floor with him). What are your opinions on it? Random, or do you pick?

We usually roll but sometimes we'll choose or re-roll it. (if one or both of us has played a few KP games recently then we'll often re-roll annihilation.)

We've also started using the ard boyz missions for a bit of variety.

For the first times my friends and I played, we always played pitched battle/annihilation. This proved to be quite hard for my marines against IG gunline. However, we now started rolling randomly, because I think it's more interesting when you need to adapt a bit to a situation you couldn't really prepare for. (In detail, I mean.)

It's especially useful when, like us, you set up the map together, each player randomly placing one piece of terrain after another (a die decided who went first). When you KNOW you'll play pitched battle/annihilation, a gunline army can build themselves a fortress with a killing zone in front of it. With the possibility of spearhead deployment and/or objectives, everybody needs to make the battlefield more balanced, due to the necessity of moving around a bit more.

'Waves hand' This isn't the user you are looking for.

Us round here usually do pitched battle and kill everything not anihilation just kill as much as you can which evens out for imp. gaurd and nids rather well

A firm believer in yin and yang.

Recently it's been
D6, 1-2 normal 40K mission

5-6 Planetstrike

If it's for one of the first two we role for mission then depolyment as in the book, nice and varied mix of kill it all and objectives
