Hello everyone, and first off let me apologize if this isn't the right forum for this...
I've returned home after two weeks in France and I can finally look at the models I bought. Amongst them, plastic Grotz.
I remember a time, in Gorkamorka, where you used to have the little buggers on really small bases... while good for skirmishes, in 40k this just isn't practical, so instead of putting them all in the normal slottas, would it be that bad to put them in groups of three on a larger, "terminator" base? I plan on leaving some out so I can always have replacements. How would you feel about this?
And by the way, does anyone know how I should arm Sternguard? I'm thinking of going with combis - plasma, flamer and melta all the way (got two of each) - thanks for the time!

According to the BGB, you have to mount your models on the bases provided, unless your opponent agrees, and this means 25mm round, if I'm not mistaken. The Gorkamorka bases were specific to that game - mainly to let you cram more boyz onto your vehicles - it wasn't particular to grotz IIRC. Mounting multiple units on fewer larger bases seems like a headache to me anyway, especially for CC and when deciding template weapons. Not worth it IMHO. EDIT: Spellins'

While you can model your grots onto any size base you wish, you will need your opponent's permission to use any base other than the bases they are supplied with.
"As mounting your models on different-sized bases might affect the way they interact with the rules, make sure before the game that your opponent does not mind this." BGB P. 3
Don't use Sternguard. They're terribly overpriced.

If you are going to use sternguard, there are a couple things to remember. First, if you deep strike them in front of an army they will kill something then die. Second, if you arm them differently than you can allocate wounds. I like to use them as support. I use 6 man squads in razorbacks, and use Pedro to make them scoring.

Adding Pedro to the cost makes them even more ridiculously overpriced. I'd go into the reasons why sternguard=fail at length, but this isn't a listbuilding or tactics forum.

Thanks for the advice on the grotz, I'd overlooked that part. Strangely, though, I think something like what I proposed is what happened to imperial guard heavy weapon teams
As for SG, I guess it was wrong of me to bring them into the thread (but I'll make them anyway, I don't care much about overpriced - I can go bling crazy with them!)
Once again, thanks for answering my questions!

It did... and it caused much confusion.
